She is not reading. She is writing a letter

Present Continuous Tense

Обозначает действие в процессе его развития, совершающееся в настоящий момент. Состоит из вспомогательного глагола to be и причастия I смыслового глагола (так называемой –ing формы).

Ex. 1. Make questions and answer them in the negative.

1. The man is waiting for you. 2. The children are playing in the garden. 3. The people are hurrying to the stadium to see the football match. 4. He is coming to the University later today. 5. They are arriving in Moscow tomorrow. 6. You are going to the cafeteria. 7. Mary is doing her lessons now. 8. his parents are leaving next week. 9. The students of group Five are writing a test. 10. The family are having dinner now. 11. Mr. Black is speaking over the telephone now.

Ex. 2. Change the sentences as in the model:

Model: She is reading now (to write a letter).

1. Helen is skating now (to ski). 2. They are playing chess (checkers – шашки). 3. The students are going home (to the library). 4. Mother is making dinner (to wash dishes in the kitchen). 5. Father is working in the garden (to take a rest). 6. Ann and John are swimming there (to lie in the sun). 7. I am asking you questions (to answer your questions). 8. Student Popov is sitting at his desk (to stand at the blackboard). 9. She is learning new words (to recite a poem). 10. We are having a meeting (to have an English class).

Ex. 3. Put the verb into correct form:

1. ‘You are working hard today.’ ‘Yes, I have a lot to do.’ (to work)

Ex. 4. Answer the questions:

1. Are you having an English class now? 2. Are you speaking Russian? 3. Are you sitting or standing? 4. Is the teacher asking you questions? 5. Are you answering your teacher’s questions? 6. Is the teacher speaking English? 7. Are you listening to what the teacher is saying? 8. Are you looking at the blackboard? 9. Are you looking at the teacher? 10. Is he (she) reading the text or writing the words on the blackboard? 11. Are you repeating the words after him (her)?

Translate from Russian into English:

1. Вы торопитесь на занятия (to hurry)? – Да. В 11.00 у нас лекция.

2. Куда вы идете? – Я иду в библиотеку.

3. Вы читаете? Что вы читаете?

4. Ваш брат дома? – Да. Он занят сейчас. Он готовит уроки (to do one’s lessons).

5. Я хочу видеть профессора Смирнова. – Простите, его нет здесь. Он читает лекцию в 9-й аудитории.

6. Где Виктор? – Он в читальном зале (a reading room). Он читает газеты. – Какие газеты он читает? – Я не знаю.

7. На следующей неделе (next week) мы едем в Сочи.

8. Куда все (everybody) спешат? – На стадион. Там сегодня интересный матч.

9. Не шумите (to make a noise). Дети спят.

10. Отец дома? – Да. Он работает в саду. Он часто там работает в это время.
