Pronunciation Word choice: crossing, drive, ride, tour USAGE NOTES
Crossing is a short journey on a boat or ship which goes from one side of a sea, lake, or other area of water to the other side: The ferry (= паром) crossing is not difficult, none of us are sea-sick. Drive is a journey in a car: a 12 hour / 15 minutes drive; go for a drive means you drive somewhere, just for enjoyment. Ride is short journey in a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a bicycle or a horse. Go for a ride means you ride somewhere just for enjoyment. Tour is a planned journey during which a politician, entertainer, or sport team visit several different places usually within a fixed period of time: The king is leaving for a six-week tour of Australia and New Zealand. This applies to the third person singular (he, she, it + Present Simple verb) and to plural nouns. 1. If the word ends in [s], [z], [ʃ], [ʤ], [ʧ] the final -s is pronounced [iz]:
2. If the word ends in [p], [t], [k], [f], [θ] the final -s is pronounced [s]:
3. If the word ends in [b], [d], [g], [v], [ð], [l], [m], [n], [η] or any vowel sound, the final -s is pronounced [z]:
