KAUNAS. THE M.K.ČIURLIONIS ART MUSEUM

It impossible to imagine the development of Lithuanian culture, the country’s artistic life today without this Museum. Founded in 1935, the Museum has done a great deal to preserve and popularize professional and folk art, the creative legacy of the great and original Lithuanian artist M.K. Čiurlionis (1875-1911).

The earliest Lithuanian paintings exhibited in the Museum dates back to the 17th century and are typical of the baroque style. The collection of the 18th-19th-century paintings is also worth seeing. But particularly valuable are several works housed in a separate gallery, opened 1970. Its halls are equipped with facilities for special conditions required for preserving these paintings.

Mikalajus Konstantinas Čiurlionis came to the fore (= became important) in the world art as an artist of inimitable and extremely original individuality. The famous French writer Romain Rolland wrote of his work that it was a new huge spiritual continent whose Christopher Columbus was undoubtedly Čiurlionis. His paintings were not, by all means, understood by all. In his works reality was fused with poetry and romance and was expressed in allegorical and fantastic images. He sought to (= tried to get) philosophically generalized nature, space and the phenomena of human life, to discover their essence.

The Gallery exhibits the series of his works called “The Making of the World”, “The Signs of Zodiac”, “Winter”, “Spring”, “Summer”. The paintings “Rex”, “Truth”, in which the artist revuals the greatness of Nature and Man and the infiniteness of his intelligence and power. Being also a composer, Čiurlionis introduced musical canons in the color and composition of his paintings, and this synthesis gave birth to such remarkable canvases as “The Sonata of the Spring” or “The Sonata of the Sun” or “The Sonata of the Sea”. The colors, tones and the development of the theme are subordinate to the laws of music. After viewing the pictures by Čiurlionis you may proceed to the music hall of the Gallery and you can hear his symphonic poems “The Sea” and “In the Wood” and the others piano pieces and folk songs arranged by Ciurlionis.
