I take great pleasure in utilizing this opportunity to address all operatives in the Human Resources Departments of our European subsidiaries. As you all know, the course of history has brought about momentous changes in Europe and we cannot afford to let new chances pass us by. For this reason, we must all re-think, re-structure and react. To this end I am issuing a Management Directive to all Human Resources Departments to launch an all-out effort to attract multi-lingual personnel at all levels. The logistics at local level are entirely the province of individual Human Resources Managers, but let me make myself clear on this, we need and expect results and an up-to-date profile of all sub­sidiaries will be drawn up exactly one year from now. Existing employees must be encouraged to develop their language skills in their free time in courses run on company premises. Promotion prospects will be made dependent on this. Harvard Plastics are willing to refund employees' outlay on language tuition upon successful completion of a recognized qualification. Extra bonuses will be paid if an employee learns more than one foreign language. Furthermore, additional financial incentives will be made available to promote the study of Eastern European Languages such as Russian, Polish and Hungarian, for I feel that a sales thrust eastwards in the near future can only succeed if our personnel can operate through the medium of the language in the sales territory targeted. I trust that our European Languages Drive Project will be crowned with success and feel sure that a high degree of response throughout our organiza­tion will serve to secure jobs in the future.
