“US Armed Forces Organization”

 

The “Armed Forces of the United States” means the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, including their Regular and Reserve Components.

The res comps are: the Army National Guard of the United States; the Army Reserve; the Marine Corps Reserve; the Air National Guard of the United States, the Air Force Reserve, the Coast Guard Reserve. They are ordered to active duty in case of war or national emergency.

Under the Constitution of the United States the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The President is assisted by several agencies, the most important of them being the National Security Council and the department of Defense.

The US Armed Forces are under control of the DOD headed by the civilian Secretary of Defense (SECDEF).

The US Armed Forces include the three main armed services: Army, Navy and Air Force. Each armed service had its own Department (Department of the Army, Department of the Navy and Department of the Air Force) headed by a civilian secretary (Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Navy, secretary of the Air Force).

The actual command of the Armed Services in each dept is exercised by the Chief of Staff, United States Army, chief of Naval Operations, and Chief of Staff, United States Air Force. The Joint Chiefs of Staff consists of the Chairman, the Chief of Staff United States Army, chief of Staff, United States Air Force; Chief of Naval Operations, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. They perform joint strategic and logistic planning. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are assisted by a Joint Staff (400 officers, selected in approximately equal numbers from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps).

The Joint Chiefs of Staff are the principal mil advisers to the President, the NSC, and the SECDEF.

The US Army is organized by branch. The branches are grouped into arms and services. The arms are Infantry, Artillery, Field Artillery), Armor, the Corps of Engineers, and signal Corps. The main services are Adjutant General’s Corps. Quartermaster Corps, Finance Corps, Chaplain Corps (CHC), Ordnance Corps, Chemical Corps, Army Intelligence and Security Branch, Transportation Corps, Corps of Engineers, Signal Corps, Army Medical service, Military Police Corps. The Corps of Engineers and the Signal Corps are considered to be both an arm and a service.

The personnel of all arms and services is grouped into large units, units and small units. The small units are: squad (sqd), section (sec), platoon (plat), company (co), battery (btry), Battalion (bn), regiment (regt), and brigade (bde) are units.

The large units include the division (div), army corps, field army, and army group.
