The English Channel




The Perfect Tense

I. Name 3 main forms of the verbs and then make up the Perfect Infinitive using Participle II:

Model: to give-gave-given; to have given

II. Read and translate the following sentences into Russian:

1. I can’t get into the room. I have lost the key.

2. My sister has always helped me with my English.

3. It is absolutely dark in the room. Who has turned off the light?

4. What’s the time? – Sorry, I have left my watch at home.

5. I don’t see my dictionary on the table. Who has taken it? – It’s me. I have put it on the shelf.

6. You have never heard about it, have you?

7. We haven’t yet read about it in the newspaper.

8. He hasn’t written to her yet.

9. We haven’t seen him since we finished school.

17. Has everybody come? – Yes, all are present. We can begin this meeting.

18. They have had no lectures this week. Their lecturer has been ill since last Monday.

19. Mary’s just made coffee.

20. He’s gone to bed.

III. Read the text and find all the verbs in the Present Perfect Tense:

Frenchmen call it “La Manche” – the sleeve – but to the English the English Channel, is one of the world’s most extraordinary pieces of water. For centuries, the Channel has been Britain’s defence against invaders. The sailors know it as perhaps the most dangerous sea channel in Europe.

Several armies have crossed the channel, but none have crossed for over nine centuries, although some have tried more recently. Over the years, people have crossed it by balloon, canoe, parachute, waterskies, and by swimming! The British seem to enjoy using the strange methods of crossing the Channel, using everything from a car to a bed.

IV. Make up sentences according to the given models:

Model 6: Why haven’t you done it?

(to study this material, to learn these rules, to put the book in its place, to close the door, to open the window, to call me up)

V. Make the sentences:

a) interrogative:

1. You have taken my note-book.

2. His sister has passed her examinations.

3. Her brother has entered Moscow University.

4. The children have already had breakfast.

5. The teacher has just come.

6. The students have been busy the whole day.

7. She has translated this article.

8. The delegation has returned home.

9. They have heard much about it.

b) negative:

1. Our professor has come from London. (yet)

VI. Make up questions with the words given:

VII. Make up questions using the following word combinations and answer them:

Model: Have you ever been to New York?

To go on a tourist trip, to be in the mountains, to get lost in a strange place, to meet a famous person, to write a letter to a newspaper, to give an interview, to win something in lottery.

VIII. Answer the questions using the Present Perfect Tense:

IX. Open the brackets:

X. Make up sentences according to the given model:

XI. Make the sentences:

a) interrogative:

1. They had arrived at the station by 6 o’clock.

2. James had finished reading the book by last Sunday.

3. Eve had done her homework by the time you called her up.

4. The teacher had given the pupils their home task before the bell rang.

5. The teacher said that Molly had made good progress.

6. By one o’clock Nora and her friends had been in the country.

b) negative using the adverbial clauses of time given in brackets:

(by this time yesterday; by 7 o’clock; when he came into the room; by the time you arrived; by last year; before we returned home)

Model: They had sent the letter.

They hadn’t yet sent the letter by 6 o’clock yesterday.

6. The speaker had made his report.

XII. Use the Present Perfect or the Past Indefinite:

XIII. Use the Present Indefinite or the Present Perfect:

XV. Perfect or Not? Open the brackets.

21. “Where is your car?” – “It (fill) in the garage at the moment”.

22. I’ve got two questions to you. First: “What language (speak) all over the world?” Second: “What language (speak) in this room?”

XVI. Translate into English:

1. Я делаю эту работу уже два часа, но сделала только часть.

2. Когда закончат ломать этот дом? Его ломают уже 2 недели и еще не сломали.

3. Зачем ты купила эту шляпу? – Я иду в субботу в театр и мне нужно что-то модное, а после театра мы с друзьями едем в ресторан.

4. Я наблюдал, как она переводила текст, и мне было ее жалко.

5. На улице шел снег, поэтому я надел теплое пальто, сапоги и взял с собой зонт.

6. Не могли бы вы написать эту работу как-нибудь в другой раз? – Если у меня будет время на этой, то к вашему приезду работа уже будет написана.

XVII. Translate into English:

1. В этом году мы часто были в Историческом музее. А вы?

3. За последнее время он часто работал в этой библиотеке.
