Artillery is a supporting arm. Its main mission is to provide fire support for other arms. Artillery can destroy and neutralize enemy defenses, fortifies positions, troops concentration, armored fighting vehicles, APCs, SP guns, tanks, IFVs, artillery pieces and other weapons both conventional and nuclear. Artillery can also disorganize the enemy communications and supply system.

Artillery is divided into field artillery and air defense artillery. Field artillery is equipped with cannons and missiles.

Field artillery cannons are classified according to caliber as light (122-mm and less), medium (greater than 120-mm but not to exceed than 60-mm), heavy and very heavy (greater than 160-mm but not exceed 210-mm).

According to their means of transportation they are classified as towed, self-propelled and aerial (carried on airmobile vehicles).

According to their firing characteristics tube artillery pieces are divided into guns and howitzers. Guns are used for direct fire. Howitzers can be used both for direct and indirect fire.

The howitzer battalion is organized with Hq and Hq battery, three batteries of 8 tubes each and a service battery. The howitzer battery includes a battery Hw and two firing platoons. The howitzer battalion is equipped with M109A1 self-propelled full-tracked howitzer caliber 155-mm. Its weight is 24 tons, the range of fire 18 km, road speed 56 km/h, cruising range- 390 km, and it carries a unit of fire of 56 rounds.

The crew is 6 men strong.

The 155-mm howitzer can fire not only conventional munitions but projectiles with nuclear charges as well.
