Before watching. The radical promise of the multi-touch interface
About this video By Jeff Han THE RADICAL PROMISE OF THE MULTI-TOUCH INTERFACE Give your own comment. Give a short summary of the comments to the video. Give a short summary of the video. 5 Discuss: how programming the world will alter even daily physical activities of people (advantages and disadvantages).
Jeff Han's intuitive "interface-free" computer displays -- controlled by the touch of fingertips -- will change forever the way you think about computers. At TED 2006, the audience whistled, clapped and gasped audibly as Han demoed (for the first time publicly) his prototype drafting table-cum-touch display, developed at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
For additional information about the presenter go to http://www.ted.com/speakers/jeff_han.html After years of research on touch-driven computer displays, Jeff Han has created a simple, multi-touch, multi-user screen interface that just might herald the end of the point-and-click era. 1 Translate into Russian: Interact, access, accessibility, kiosk, interactive whiteboard, multiple, finger, approach, scalable, lava lamp application, inject heat into, instruction manual, sculpting tool, cool down, solidify, light box application, newfound, screensaver app, effortless, grip, stretch out, pan, rotate, zoom, canvas, mouse-and-windows-pointer interface, bring up a keyboard, apply, anticipate, stroke, magnifying glass tool, data visualization, data set, device, drill down, conform to, drift, switch to, plug-in, seamless, determine, mapping application, gesture, relegate to, axis of tilt, tilt up and down, curve, entertainment app, manipulate a mesh, state-of-the-art, research.

Watch the video “The radical promise of the multi-touch interface” http://www.ted.com/talks/jeff_han_demos_his_breakthrough_touchscreen.html While watching: Fill in the gaps: a) Now, this is a ______ drafting table. It's about 36 inches wide and it's equipped with a ______ sensor. b) However, the approach I built here is actually ______, ______, and probably most importantly, very ______. c) So, the technology, you know, isn't the most exciting thing here right now, other than probably its ______ ______. d) This is a photographer's light box ______. Again, I can use both of my hands to ______ and move photos around. But what's even cooler is that if I have two fingers, I can actually grab a photo and then ______ it out like that really easily. I can pan, ______ and rotate it ______. e) And that's really important, because there's no reason in this day and age that we should be ______ to a physical ______. f) Of course I can do it with all my hands. It's pressure- ______, you can notice. But what's neat about that is, again, I showed you that ______ gesture that allows you to zoom in really quickly. g) Let me show you another app here. This is something called WorldWind. It's done by NASA. It's a kind of -- we've all seen Google Earth; this is an ______ version of that. There are ______ to be able to load in different ______ that NASA's collected over the years. h) They have these ______images that are ______ so you can -- it's really good for determining vegetative use.
After watching: 1 Match the words in A with the words in B:
2 Answer the questions: a) What kind of a drafting table is Jeff Han using in his talk? b) How does it differ from the normal touch sensors? c) How is he describing the new multi-touch interface? How did it start? d) How does it improve the use of the photographer’s light box application? What can you do with the pictures? e) What is special about the application with little fuzz balls? f) What is new about mapping application? g) How can you use this interface in drawing?
3 Decide if the statements are true or false: a) A multi-touch sensor is a normal touch sensor that can only register one point of contact at a time. b) Multi-touch sensing is high-resolution, low-cost, and probably most importantly, very scalable. c) In a photographer's light box application you can pan, zoom and rotate and move photos around effortlessly. d) We have so much technology nowadays that we should start conforming to interfaces. e) Multi-touch mapping applications are simply relegated to a kind of 2D panning and motion. f) Multi-touch interaction research is a very expensive field right now and his kind of technology is going not to let even more people get into it.
