What is Pharmacy?

Definition of the pharmacy. Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences. It learns how to use pharmaceutical drugs safe and effectively. The word “pharmacy” comes from the Greek “ pharmakon”, meaning “drug” or “medicine”. It is used since 15^th – 17^th centuries.

The pharmacy practice includes many traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications. It also includes many modern services related to health care, including clinical services and providing drug information.

History. Pharmacyis as old as man himself.The firstprimitive man who tried to use a plant in the food and observed that it caused disease was already in the drug business. Paleopharmacological studies attest to the use of medicinal plants in pre-history. The earliest texts preserved dates to the 3^rd or 4^th century AD. The old Egyptian texts list many preparations, some components of which are still used in modified form.

The first pharmacy in Europe was opened in 1241 in Trier, Germany. There are old pharmacies still operating in Dobrovnic, Croatia located inside the Franciscan monastery, opened in 1317; and one in the Town Hall Square of Tallinn, Estonia dating from at least 1422.

Definition of the pharmacist. Pharmacists are experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes. They are highly qualified, highly trained and skilled healthcare professionals. Pharmacists are represented internationally by international Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).

Pharmacists practice in a variety of areas including retail, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, mental hospitals, and regulatory agencies. Pharmacists can specialize in various areas of practice

Definition of the chemist’s. An establishment in which pharmacy is practiced we call a pharmacy, chemist’s or in the United States drug store. US drug stores usually sell not only medicines, but also candy (sweets), cosmetics and magazines.

The field of Pharmacy. The field of Pharmacy can generally be divided into three primary disciplines:

· Pharmaceutics;

· Medicinal chemistry and Pharmacognosy;

· Pharmacy practice.

The boundaries between these disciplines and with other sciences, such as biochemistry, are not always clear-cut. Pharmacology is sometimes considered a fourth discipline of pharmacy.
