1. Learn how to interpret data on the CPI and the PPI.

Study the following chart that gives data on the CPI and the PPI for several European countries, Japan, Australia and the USA.

Figures represent % change at annual rate.

3 mnths – 3 months – average of latest 3 months compared with average of previous 3 months, % change at annual rate – середня величина за останніх 3 місяці у порівнянні з середньою величиною за 3 попередніх місяці, зміна у відсотках річного показника;

A. Analyze the data for each country. Use the following as a model. Make your speech more varied by using different verbs for upward and downward movement.

· Canada’s consumer price index has risen to 2.9% in the year to May and has grown by 3.8 % over the latest 3 months as compared with the previous 3 months.

· Canada’s producer prices have grown by 10.5% in the past 3 months and by 8.9% in the year to May. Therefore we can predict the increase of the rate of inflation in the nearest future.

B. Analyze the CPI and find out:

a) in what country the CPI has risen the most in the latest 3 months/1 year;

b) in what country the CPI has risen the least in the latest 3 months/1year;

c) in what country the CPI has fallen in the latest 3 months/1 year.

C. In the same way analyze the PPI and find out the respective information.

D. Compare the CPI and the PPI increase for Britain, Belgium and Japan. Draw your conclusions about the economic situation in these countries. What processes do we observe in these countries?

E. Compare the CPI and the PPI increase for France, Italy and Sweden. What is common and what is different in the economic situations in these countries? How might the situation develop in each of them?

2. Get ready to speak about inflation, its types, causes and indicators used to measure it.
