The admission standards for the state universities emphasize a strong academic secondary school background so that students are ready to learn when they enter university. These standards represent minimum requirements but meeting them does not guarantee admission, since campus officials consider a wide range of factors in admission decisions. Students must have fulfilled all requirements for the secondary school diploma or its equivalent upon enrolment. It is important to note that admissions standards for a state university are mostly the same. So, when choosing one, the potential student has many factors to consider: what courses are offered, how long the program for each degree lasts, and the possibilities for student accommodation.

STEP ONE: LEARN MORE ABOUT UNIVERSITY. For many teens, it seems to be an easy choice—they just want to go to the nearest university or the one their friends are planning to attend. However, finding a university is not an easy task. It takes a lot of homework and legwork. Checking out all of the university brochures, websites, and resources is a good starting point for identifying the main advantages of each university: its academic reputation, the availability of financial aid, and the job placement ratings for its graduates. However, the best way to decide if a university is a good fit for a person may be to take an individualized tour. Applicants may use some free time to see the campus, meet with teachers, talk to current students and catch a glimpse of daily student life.

STEP TWO: SUBMIT AN APPLICATION. An applicant completes and submits the online application for admission. There is no application fee. Students will be asked to present information about previous education. Prospective students indicate their choice of an academic program. The next step is to submit all the necessary documentation. Each student application must be accompanied by an attached photo, a school grade card and Independent Testing Certificates.

STEP THREE: ACADEMIC TESTING. There are specific entry requirementsforeach course, both in terms of the subjects an applicant has already studied and the examination grades required for entry. Students are enrolled on the basis of the Independent Testing Performance. The grades required vary between universities and also between subjects.

In some cases the Admission Department examines previous school grades and independent test scores. In addition, applicants are also given an assessment test to help the faculty confirm that the applicant is academically prepared to enter this program for which he (she) is applying.

STEP FOUR: FAMILY INTERVIEW. Once the paperwork and testing has been completed, the Admissions Director usually contacts the applicants to schedule a meeting between them and University administrators. This is a vital part of the admissions process and provides a time for students and staff to get to know one another more personally. It is also an ideal opportunity for parents to ask any final questions that they may have.

STEP FIVE: ENROLMENT. Enrolment paperwork is to be completed before the first day of University. Applicants are admitted as student in the university on the basis of the results of their entrance exams in July or August.

Once applicants have completed all these steps, they begin their studies. The academic year begins on September 1 and finishes at the end of June and consists of two terms. Between the two terms there is a three week break in January: the first term (September - January) the second one (February - June). Summer holidays last for two months on average. At the end of each term the students take examinations and receive credits for the courses they pass. If the students do not pass a course, they will need to retake that course the following term. Students have classes every day except on holidays and weekends. They attend lectures and tutorials, and work with materials in the libraries and resource centres. Successful graduates receive a diploma accompanied by a transcript listing the courses they completed.
