Nslookup is a network utility program used to obtain information about Internet servers. As its name suggests, the utility finds name of server information for domains by querying DNS.

Using nslookup. Most computer operating systems include a built-in command line program called nslookup.exe. Some network providers also host their own Web-based services of this same utility. These programs are all designed to perform name server look-ups against specified Internet domains.

By default, nslookup responds with the primary IP address associated with a domain specified. To query the primary address of about.com, for example:

\> about.com

Address: 67.215.65.132

nslookup [ - SubCommand... ] [{ ComputerToFind | [ - Server ]}]

- SubCommand...: Specifies one or more nslookup subcommands as a command-line option.

ComputerToFind: Looks up information for ComputerToFind using the current default DNS name server, if no other server is specified. To look up a computer not in the current DNS domain, append a period to the name.

- Server: Specifies to use this server as the DNS name server. If you omit -Server, the default DNS name server is used.

{help|?}: Displays a short summary of nslookup subcommands.

4.3.1 List the basic tools built into OS, designed for analysis configuration and state of the network based on TCP / IP.

4.3.2 Specify the purpose and main parameters of utility ping.

4.3.3 Specify the parameters and the basic utilities tracert.

4.3.4 What does the command ping 127.0.0.1?

4.3.5 Specify the purpose utility nslookup.

4.3.6 What we need to use utility netstat for?

4.3.7 What outputs utility ipconfig by default?

4.3.8 For what do we use the utility Telnet?

4.1 Investigate, using this guidance, the main built-in facilities intended for the analysis of configuration and status network based on TCP / IP.

4.2 Prepare a protocol of the laboratory work, which reflect the theme purpose of the work, a brief description of utilities designed to analyze configuration and state of the network based on TCP / IP.

4.3 Prepare answers to check-up questions.

4.5.1 Part 1. Using ping and tracert tools for analysis configuration and state of the network based on TCP / IP

4.5.1.1 Using a utility ping, check the connection with the following Nodes: www.infoart.ru, www.mari.ru, www.rambler.ru, www.marsu.ru, www.altavista.com, www.nn.onat.ira.net. Decide to nodes which can be accessed and by whom - no. Define time access to specified sites.

4.5.1.2 Follow the ping utility with the addresses to which access was obtained in Clause 1 of the keys.

4.5.1.3 Using a utility tracert, define routes to hosts, to which was obtained access to item 1. For each analyzed route record the total number of routers and their IP- addresses and domain names.

4.5.1.4 Do tracert utility keys. Note. To open a command prompt, press Start button and select All Programs, Standards and command lines.

4.5.2 Part 2. Using utilities nslookup, netstat, ipconfig, whois for analysis configuration and state of the network based on TCP / IP

4.5.2.1Using utility nslookup, define unlisted IP-addresses and DNS of hosts, specified in Part 4.5.1. In case of failure to define addresses, testify the reasons why.

4.5.2.2 Do the utility nslookup with – type=any for specified nodes.

4.5.2.3 Do netstat utility with the keys –a, -e, -n, -s, -p name, -r. Netstat utility do with browser activated.

4.5.2.4 From the web-pages http://redo.com.ua/cgi-bin/whois, http://www.hostobzor.ru/tools/who_is.php http://whois.internic.com.ua send a request to specified nodes.

NOTE: Item 4 does only by teacher’s instructions.
