The purpose of the primary survey is identify immediate problems at an accident so that those who need care promptly can receive it. The rescuer should to check such major life-threatening condition as respiration, pulse and bleeding. He have to stop bleeding and provide artificial respiration if necessary.

As soon as the primary survey have been conducted and life threatening conditions have been stabilize, the firefighter should conduct a secondary survey. The purpose of the secondary survey are to locate further injuries or emergencies and to give the proper first aid, treatment or care. Certain diagnostic signs helps in determining the condition of a patient. This diagnostic signs included respiration, pulse rate, blood pressure, skin temperature and colour, pupils of the eyes, state of consciousness, reaction to pain and ability to move.
