You will hear part of an interview with Kathy, a Brithish woman who lives in Greece and is married to a Greek man. She is talking about the differences between family life in Britain and Greece. For questions 1-8, decide which statements are T (true) and which are F (false). Give your reasons.

Listening I

Prepare a report on the Russian family and make a presentation to your group mates.

Agree or disagree. Give your reasons.

It is common for members of the family other than the husband, wife and children to live together.

Members of the whole family don’t maintain close kinship ties.

American parents are generally very permissive just like all the parents around the world.

Young people are expected to leave their parents in their late teens or early twenties.

The lack of independence often results in serious problems for the ageing parents of a nuclear family.

Which familiar structure is known as nuclear? What is an extended family? Compare both types of family. Which has more benefits, in your opinion?

Do you approve of the fact that children might be encouraged to be independent at an early age/ why? Why not?

Living with parents after 18 is regarded as a failure by American teenagers. Are there the same views among Russian young people?

What problem do the elderly have to go through? How is this problem solved in the USA? Are there any other ways to help old people adapt to a new lifestyle?

LISTENING COMPREHENSION
