What Is Sex Education?

Sex education, which is sometimes called sexuality education or sex and relationships education, is the process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships, and intimacy. Sex education is not meant to replace the role of parents. It does not teach children what is morally correct Sex education simply gives young people information so that they can make informed choices about their behavior. It also teaches them skills so that they feel confident and competent about acting on these choices. In short, sex education helps young people protect themselves against abuse, exploitation, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and HIV-AIDS.

The kinds of skills young people develop as part of sex education are similar to more general life skills. For example, they are taught to communicate effectively. This includes listening, negotiating, identifying reliable sources of help and advice, and then asking for help and advice. Other important skills include being able to recognize and resist pressure or coercion from others, and dealing with prejudice. Effective sex education also teaches young people to differentiate between accurate and inaccurate information and gives them the tools to discuss perspectives on sex and sexuality, including different cultural attitudes and sensitive issues like sexual preference, abortion, and contraception.
