Task 13. Make the written translation into Russian (1,500 characters)
Task 12. Write the summary of the text «Electricity and Magnetism» using the map below. Task 11. Choose the correct answer. Task 10. Choose the main idea of the text. Task 9. Decide if the statements are true, false or not mentioned in the text. Task 8. Read the text «Electricity and Magnetism» again and find the English equivalents for the following words. Статическое электричество, электрический ток, электрическая цепь, электромагнитное поле, шкала электромагнитных волн, рентгеновские лучи, преобразоваться обратно, полупроводники, электрический сигнал.
1. Magnetic fields and electrical currents make waves of energy that flow outward into space at the speed of light which are called «electromagnetic radiation». 2. Subatomic particles, such as electrons, possess minute electrical charges. 3. The knowledge of electromagnetic radiation is used to build telescopes. 4. Electricity and magnetism were long thought to be separate forces. 5. Electricity and magnetism is one of the major branches or sections of scientific study. 1. Our society uses electricity and magnetism in many ways. 2. Electricity and magnetism, although separate, are strongly interrelated. Electricity creates a magnetic field, and magnets can be used to create electricity. 3. Though seemingly two different forces, electricity and magnetism are actually closely related and important for the society. 1. What are the types of electricity? a) stationary charges and static electricity b) static electricity and electrical currents c) electric power and energy 2. What is a magnetic field? a) a natural force b) the ability of a magnet to attract magnetic materials c) the area around a magnet in which magnetic forces can be detected 3. What is electromagnetic radiation? a) the result of oscillating electric and magnetic fields b) the flow of electricity c) a process in which energetic particles or energetic waves travel through vacuum
Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and flow of electric charge. Electricity gives a wide variety of well-known effects, such as lightning, static electricity, electromagnetic induction and the flow of electrical current. In addition, electricity permits the creation and reception of electromagnetic radiation such as radio waves. Magnetism is a property of materials that respond to an applied magnetic field. Permanent magnets have persistent magnetic fields caused by ferromagnetism. That is the strongest and most familiar type of magnetism. However, all materials are influenced varyingly by the presence of a magnetic field. Some are attracted to a magnetic field; others are repulsed by a magnetic field. Electromagnetism is the branch of science concerned with the forces that occur between electrically charged particles. In the electromagnetic theory these forces are explained using electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic force is one of the four fundamental interactions in nature, the other three being the strong interaction, the weak interaction and gravitation. Electromagnetism manifests as both electric fields and magnetic fields. Electric fields are the cause of several common phenomena, such as electric potential (such as the voltage of a battery) and electric current (such as the flow of electricity through a flashlight). Magnetic fields are the cause of the force associated with magnets. Both fields are simply different aspects of electromagnetism, and hence are intrinsically related. Thus, a changing electric field generates a magnetic field; conversely a changing magnetic field generates an electric field. This effect is called electromagnetic induction, and is the basis of operation for electrical generators, induction motors, and transformers. (From www.wikipedia.org) Task 14. Webquest. Make a list of devices that use electromagnetism. Use the Internet and research one of these devices and be ready ro report back to the group.
