Cromalin, proofing, digital proof, metal plate , digital proofing, film, analog proof
Densitometer, retouching, ozalids, either, register, fuzzy, proofing, or, sizing I. Read the sentences and say if they are true or false. If they are false, correct them. 1) Press proofs are produced on a letterpress printing machine. 2) Proofing can be done by several ways. 3) Proofs of four colour process work consist of a colour bar and a colour reflection densitometer. 4) Photographic/ electrostatic methods are used instead of press proofing. 5) High-quality photographic work shouldn’t have press proofs on the correct paper. 6) Blemishes, scratches, process stains and broken screens can be corrected by rescanning. 7) Colour separation should be discussed by specialists. II. Find the equivalents of the following terms: 1. proofing press a) коректура кольору 2. finished job b) прилипати, склеюватися 3. densitometer c) подряпини 4. to fit out d) повторне сканування 5. bromide e) ретушувати 6. colour correction f) густота фарби 7. rescanning g) денситометр 8. to laminate h) бромід 9. scratches i) контрольна смужка кольору 10. stain j) ламінувати 11. to adhere k) прободрукарська машина 12. ink density l) приладнати 13. colour bar m)оздоблювання, брошурування 14. to retouch n) пляма фарби
III. Fill the gaps using the following words: 1) Proofing can be done … on a press … by using photographic/electrostatic methods. 2) Before …, an offset plate is produced in the normal way. 3) Colour bars enable the ink density and other factors to be read by use of a …. 4) The four plastic sheets are superimposed in … and laminated for protection. 5) Black-and-white halftones are normally proofed as … or photographic bromides. 6) Colour proofs should be checked for … and colour quality. 7) A subject which is out of register will look … and slightly out of focus. 8) Manual … is a highly skilled and expensive process.
IV. Which term does each definition refer to? a) A type of offset printing plate that uses aluminium as its base material, and can be coated with a variety of photosensitive or heat-sensitive layers to carry the image.
b) It is used in an imagesetter. Negative is characterized by the areas carrying image information for print being transparent and the non-printing areas are black. Positive are those with areas carrying image information for print in black and the non-printing areas are transparent.
c) Process used for quality control in prepress and printing regarding colour reproduction, register, text and image layout, or as a sample for the production run.
d) They are produced photomechanically from films that have been exposed, for instance, using colour foils.
e) Producing page proofs directly from stored digital information without creating a film negative. Some examples are prints from laser, ink-jet, thermal transfer and dye sublimation.
f) They are produced using an NIP-technology based colour printer from the digital data file. The expected print result on a production press should be reproduced as accurately as possible. This is supported/achieved by using colour management systems.
g) This refers to a colour-proofing system which is used to make proofs for offset and gravure (positive), but also for flexo and newspaper print (negative).
