Introduction to the theme

As an introduction to the lesson “An English speaking country” for students a teacher may say that it is impossible to know the language without knowing anything about its country, culture and traditions.

 

Pre-listening discussion

Ask students to answer the following questions:

  • What English speaking countries do you know?
  • What do you know about Great Britain?
  • Where is it situated?
  • What are the parts of Great Britain?
  • Who rules the country?

 

ACTIVE VOCABULARY

Ask students to study the Russian equivalents to the following words and word combinations and to pronounce them correctly and to make up examples with the words:

Ask students to listen to text GREAT BRITAIN paying attention to the discussed words and word combinations.

GREAT BRITAIN

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The surface of the British Isles varies very much. There are mountains in the north of Scotland and England and valleys and plains in the south and the center of the country. There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain but they are not very long. The mountains and the warm waters of Gulf Stream influence the climate of the British Isles. It is mild the whole year round.

The UK is the one of the smallest country in the world. The population lives mainly in cities and towns. The UK is a monarchy, the head of the state is the Queen. But in practice the Prime minister rules. The UK is a highly developed industrial country. Its capital is London. British men are very proud of their traditions and keep them up.
