The name “ladder”, sometimes referred to as a “truck company”, comes from the type of equipment used by the fire company. The apparatus, also called an “aerial” has many functions; it is often considered the workhorse of the fire department. Ladder companies perform a variety of functions including search and rescue, ladder raising, forcible entry, ventilation, and salvage.

A standard ladder truck carries ground ladders of various shapes, types, and lengths. These include manually-raised extension ladders (usually up to 15 m long), straight ladders, roof ladders, and small attic ladders. Some ladder trucks have pumps ranging from 250 gpm (940L/min) to 1,000 gpm (5,700 L/min) capacity and a booster tank. Because of their greater amount of compartment storage place, ladder trucks often carry a variety of special tools such as life nets, oxyacetylene torches, and electrical generators.

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Standard 1901 also requires them to carry a variety of axes, crowbars, and rope among other things. The Standard’s list of recommended equipment includes a metal ceiling cutter, a water vacuum cleaner, a life gun with ammunition, and a body bag.

Vehicles that have a pump, a hose bed, water tanks, and a full complement of ground ladders are commonly called “quads”. If such a unit also has an aerial ladder or elevating platform, it is called a “quint”. In addition to its use to apply large elevated streams, the ladder or platform can be positioned in a window as a temporary standpipe for hose lines or used at low levels instead of a portable water monitor.

An aerial ladder is one of the three basic categories of aerial apparatus.

The aerial ladder:

- can telescope out to increase its length.

- primary functions include: ventilation, rescue, elevated master streams, and access to upper floors.

- may have a pre-piped waterway or a hand lay going up the center of the ladder.

- some do not have an onboard water tank, but most modern aerial ladders do carry 300 to 500 gallons of water.

Aerial ladder apparatus consists of a power-operated metal ladder mounted on a specially built chassis. The aerial ladder is hydraulically powered and may be mounted on a single chassis. Aerial apparatus consists of a continuous walkway for the purpose of fire and rescue operations ranging in lengths from 20m to 41m.
