Firefighters’ training is a never ending process. Even people who have been with the department 20 years will always have something to learn. It is necessary to keep up with changing conditions and modern challenges because the fire service is ever changing and never static. New ideas and tactics present new methods that have to be learned. New materials and technology present challenges that never before existed. It is imperative that the fire service remain abreast of these changes. This is accomplished only by frequent and intense training that is constantly improved and updated to make it effective. It is important that new firefighters realize that without effective training, the fire department is about as useful as the spectators on the sidewalk. Promotional advancements and efficiency will depend on how much is put forth in the pursuit of learning. The success firefighters experience under emergency conditions will also depend on this learning.

Training available to firefighters comes from several sources. The most common, however, is departmental training provided by every department for its members. Training consists of classroom study and drilling. Drilling is the practical application of classroom techniques and theories and the rehearsing of pre-incident plans and courses of action. The practices are designed to allow firefighters to rehearse safely until a procedure can be performed without error or hesitation. Many times, these practices may be monotonous and tiresome, but they are necessary to perfect the fundamentals and execution of the firefighter’s position. They are also an important part of the firefighter’s protection and safety. Without drill, precision and perfection are unobtainable and success impossible.

The lives of the victims, the lives of fellow firefighters, the saving of property, the extinguishing of fire, the protection of exposures – all depend on firefighters accomplishing their tasks expediently and efficiently.
