Wahlenbergia gloriosa

History

Golden Wattle can be found on many symbols of Australia including the Australian Coat of Arms and the Order of Australia medal. The green and gold colours are often used in Australian international sporting teams. The flower has been used as Australia's national emblem since early in the 20th century but was not made the official national floral emblem until 1988, the year of Australia's bicentenary. The 1st of September is "National Wattle Day" in Australia.

Wahlenbergia gloriosa, or royal bluebell, is an Australian wildflower from the Campanulaceae family. It grows in high rainfall (for Australia) areas in the alps, in environs ranging from shady roadside cuttings on Mount Hotham to full sun herb fields on the Main range. Wahlenbergia gloriosa has small dark green leaves in rosettes, to 2 cm. The flowers are a deep blue/purple colour, and are very eyecatching. The colour is not reproducible on a computer screen or normal film (being a shade of violet, rather than purple). It grows as a suckering herb. The flower is the floral emblem of the Australian Capital Territory. Wahlenbergias are generally easily propagated by division or root cutting.

Thus to sum up all the above-mentioned in relation to the usage of flowers in the emblems of English-speaking countries we have come to the conclusion that flowers play an important role and have a great influence on the life of people in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada.

Moreover, flowers help to develop the English language by means appearing of new realia. Such as garden city, garden suburb, garden village, the order of the Thistle, “Mayflower” and others.

To cut a long story short, different sources helped us to gain good experience in improving our knowledge of the English language.
