Providing solution to the problem

Expressing opinion

EXPRESSING OPINION

Writing

1. Argumentative composition can be divided into several different types. One type is concerned with expressing opinion and providing solution to a problem.

2. The usual plan for such type of argumentative composition may be as follows:

1) State your opinion – Introduction

2) Main body: a – give the first point supporting your opinion;

b – give the second point supporting your opinion;

c – give the last point supporting your opinion.

3) Re-estate your opinion – conclusion.

1) State the problem, the main reasons for it and that there are several solutions – Introduction.

2) Main body: a – your first suggestion;

b – your second suggestion

3) Summarize your opinion – conclusion.

3. Some useful tips:

For expressing opinion a – state your opinion clearly; b – do not use too many personal opinion words, especially ‘I think’, although you state your opinion; c – restate your opinion in conclusion, using different words in comparison with the introduction; d – include examples to support your opinion; e – begin with your weakest points, if necessary grouping 2 or 3 minor points in one paragraph; f – the last paragraph of the main body should contain the most powerful argument; g – make sure when expressing a conflicting point to say why it is wrong;

For providing solution h – state why the problem arose; i – discuss each suggestion in turn; j – include any expected results or consequences; k – use the concluding paragraph to decide which opinion will give the best result and explain why; l – when suggesting explain why it would be a good idea.

Ex. 49. Study the linking devices.

1. To express personal opinion: In my opinion / view … To my mind / my way of thinking … Personally … I believe … It strikes me that … As far as I am concerned … 4. To emphasize what you said: Clearly; obviously that … Of course; needless to say that … In particular …
2. To express cause: Because of … Owing to … Due to … For this reason …   5. To rephrase: That is to say … In other words …
3. To express effect: Therefore … Thus … As a result … Consequently … So … As a consequence … 6. To express limit of knowledge: As far as I know … For all I know … To the best of my knowledge …

Ex. 50. Read the text. Circle the linking words in the text. Underline example of statistic information and quotations to support each point raised. Tick the words expressing personal opinion.

There are black holes and there are not holes. In my opinion the one is a successful ride at Alton Towers. The other is the financial mess that EuroDisney got itself into. EuroDismal as named by its critics, now renamed DisneyLand, Paris, down but not yet out.

The first reason is that the Disney fiasco seems perhaps a strange backdrop against which to launch Port Aventura, Europe’s second biggest theme park, near Salon, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, due to open in April 1995.

In fact the Tussauds group, owners of Alton Towers land owned by Pearson, The Financial times /Penguin Books/, Thames TV conglomerates, has been negotiating to become the theme park’s targets shareholder and opening manager.

“Just because EuroDisney has got problems, it doesn’t mean that major theme parks in Europe are bound to fail,” says Ms Rebecca Winnington-Ingram, a leisure industry analysist with Morgan Stanley. And of course, she is right. Perhaps it is the success of Alton Towers in England that has tempted Tussauds group into this £ 200 Spanish venture.

Moreover there are key differences between Port Aventura and EuroDisney, not least of which is the scale of the projects: Disneyland, Paris attracts 11 million visitors a year, but Port Aventura is forecasting 2,7 million in its first year, but rising to 5 million. Port Aventura is only open for 156 days a year under summer skies (when more than 15 million summer tourists are within easy reach), where Disneyland, Paris is open all year under much more threatening northerly skies.

The final and the most important is that Port Aventura has also avoided some of Disneyland, Paris’s last fixed costs by concentrating on the theme park and not investing in the accommodation side. Ray Barret, a Tussauds director, offers the following analysis: “Euro Disney got its theme park right and what went wrong was its inability to fill its 6 hotels.” The Mediterranean strip in which Port Aventura operates includes large resorts such as Benidorm and has an abundance of hotels already in existence.

The two parks also have a different gearing for their royalty, management and consultancy charges. The Walt Disney took a massive 31.5 per cent of EuroDisney’s operating income from its opening date. Similar charges payable from Port Aventura to Bush Entertainment (the park’s designers) and to Tussauds (its managers) start at 12.4 per cent of operating income and are set to fall to 10.4 per cent by 1998.

Ex. 51. Read the text about visiting the Funfair, write a composition expressing your opinion about visiting the Funfair.

We have been planning for a long time to go to the funfair for my brother’s birthday, on the big day we all piled up into the car and set off. The traffic was so bad that day that it took us nearly two hours to get there. Then we discovered half the people in town had had the same idea. The place was so packed with tourists that you could hardly move. My brother wanted to go on the Roller coaster, so we joined the queue – which seemed to be about a mile long and waited for our turn.

By then we got to the front of the queue, my sister was complaining she was so afraid to go on the ride, and even my brother was a bit apprehensive. Then a man announced that there was a technical problem and the ride was closed. With a sigh of relief we went to get something to eat, had a go on the bumper cars, played a few games – my brother won a huge teddy bear – and then we went home.
