A Day in London

Speaking Activity

Ex. 30. Study how to give advice in English.

1. You‘d better... You’d better go to the gift shop to buy a present.

2. I recommend you to ... I recommend you to visit British Museum first.

3. If I were you, I would... If I were you, I’d try windsurfing.

4. If you do this, you will ... If you change money beforehand, you will save time.

5. You should... You should buy a copy “Time out” magazine to know what’s on.

6. If you wish … If you wish a very cheap day in London, you’d better visit museums.

Ex. 31. Complete the table using the suitable variant.

If you wish a) a cup of coffee you‘d better go to the café
  b) to know the way I (would) recommend you to ask a passer-by
If you want c) to rent a room I advice you to find a hotel
  d) to see Shakespeare birthplace I think you may visit Stratford -upon-Evon
  e) to go round the city you should take a bus
If you like f) to change money you will go to a bank
  g) to by a ticket   ask ”standby seats”

Ex. 32. Listen to the text. Study the ways of giving advice.

1. If you are going to London for the day by train, try to buy a rail ticket that includes travel on London buses and the underground. You will save a fortune!

2. If you do need your passport and other valuables, leave them at home. London has pickpockets. They work wherever there are crowds especially underground. Wear a money belt!

3. Check you change in shops as soon you are given it. It is safer to take £ 5 notes than £ 10 or £ 20 notes.

4. If you change money before you go to London, it will save time!

5. If you change money in a bank (Barclays, Lloyds, Midlands, National Westminster), it will probably be cheaper than in “Exchange bureux”.

6. If you want to know what shows are on, how much tickets cost, you’d better buy a copy of “Time Out” magazine at the bookshops on the station where you arrive.

7. If you want to buy a ticket to a play, concert, or show, ask “standby seats” or “student standby seats”. These are cheaper but usually only available on the day of performance.

8. If you haven’t got much money, you may take your own sandwiches and drinks, as food can be quite expensive.

9. You will have a very cheap day in London if you visit art galleries and museums. In Britain they are usually free to everyone every day of the week.

10. If you want to have a very frustrating (= бесполезный, бездарный) day in London, join the queues (= очередь) at Madam Tussauds and other most popular places. There is more to London than wax figures!

(Jimmie Hill, Michael Lewes Welcome to Britain)

Ex. 33. Study the dialogue and act it out.

Kate Williams: Hello, John.

Smith: It’s a pity I have only one day for doing the sights.

K: Of course, one can’t get a full idea of London in a fortnight.

S: So, I’m afraid we won’t manage to see all the places unless we hurry.

K: Don’t worry, John. If we return to the hotel later it won’t be a tragedy, will it?

S: I think not. Such a nice place! What is this square famous for?

K: That’s a good question. Though the answer is a bit confusing.

S: Hm… Why?

K: Some people say it is famous for its cinemas and others think that these cinemas are famous because they are located in Leicester square.

S: And which one is the most fashionable?

K: “Odeon L.S.”, London’s cinema flagship.

S: And where are we going next?

K: To Trafalgar Square.

S: Are we going by bus? As for me, I would like to walk. Is it far?

K: Just down Charring Cross Road. … This is Trafalgar Square. Now you can see one of its famous landmarks.

S: Isn’t it Nelson’s column?

K: Yes. It has dominated Trafalgar Square since the 1840s.

S: I heard that there are some historical places in Trafalgar, aren’t there?

K: Sure. The National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery. If you turn to the right, you can see South Africa House. One the opposite side the Canadian Embassy is situated.

S: And how can we get to the Houses of Parliament? Shall we take a taxi?

K: I recommend you to go there by bus.

S: Let’s go by bus - just to get different impression and to get rid of some change.

K: Great! But you’d better buy a travel card.

S: Where can we buy it?

K: They are available at the underground stations, at various newsagents. The one-day travel card cost £ 2.30 for all zones.

S: Which bus is ours?

K: All buses go to the Parliament via Whitehall.
