The Old Oak Tree
THE MOON Spring Rain When Woods Are Green GRASS Water All For You EARTHLY POEMS AND PHRASES LEISURE What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare! No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. W.H. Denies The trees of the forest, The flowers on the lea, The birds on the branches, The fish of the sea;
The rocks and the mountains, The rivers that flow, The rain and the sunshine, The ice and the snow.
The corn-fields all yellow, The sky of deep blue: The sweetness and beauty Of life are for you. How beautiful the water is! To me 'tis wondrous fair — No heart can ever lonely be If water sparkle there; It hath a thousand tongues of mirth. Of grandeur, of delight, And every heart is gladder made When water greets the sight. E. Oakes SMITH Do you ever think about grass on the lawns you pass? The green of it, the sheen of it, the after-raining clean of it when it sparkles like glass? Do you know what grass is, those green spears showing wherever you're going?
Every blade, to be brief, is a leaf without a twig, without a bough. You never thought lawn mowers went around clipping leaves off the ground, did you, now? Aiken FISHER
When woods are green and groves are fair, And leaves are large and long, It's good to wander through the woods And hear the small bird's song.
Rain, rain, rain, April rain, You are feeding seed and grain, You are raising plants and crops With your gaily sparkling drops.
In the sun glitter bright, Patter gently through the night, Tender buds will burst and grow With your soft caressing flow.
In the woods violets blue, Newly blown, will smile at you, And we boys and girls will run Through your showers in the sun.
The moon has a face like the clock in the hall; She shines on thieves on the garden wall, On streets and fields and harbor quays, And birdies asleep in the forks of the trees. The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse, The howling dog by the door of the house, The bat that lies in bed at noon, All love to be out by the light of the moon. R. L. Stevenson Bluebirds singing Robins swinging Up in the old oak tree. Woodpeckers tapping Crow's wings flapping Up in the old oak tree. Thrushes nesting Swallows resting Up in the old oak tree. All birds of the air Make their homes there, Up in the old oak tree.
