What is the “sporting spirit”?

1. Extreme kinds of sports are very popular nowadays especially with young people. Extreme sports are nontraditional sports characterized by high speed and high risk. Such sports as mountain-bike racing, snowboarding and skateboarding are Olympic sports already. Less organized extreme activities include ice climbing, glacier-skiing, canyoning, free climbing and bungee jumping.

2. Skydiving consists of jumping with a parachute out of an airplane for recreation or in competitions. Competitions include jumping for style, landing with accuracy and making free-fall formations. Modern skydivers typically free-fall from 3657 m above the ground until 762 m where they open their parachutes.

3. Base jumping consists of jumping with a parachute from high places such as buildings or mountains. Bungee-jumping is now fairly popular in different countries all over the world. People attached to a long piece of elastic jump from a great height. The piece is just short enough to prevent the jumper from hitting the ground.

4. Ski boarders descend a hill on ski boards. Ski boards are basically a sort of compromise between skis and a snowboard. They are smaller than regular skis (between 100 and 80 cm long) and about twice as wide. The design allows the rider to do everything that skis and snowboards do plus go backwards, turn 360 degrees on the ground and perform more tricks than it is possible to do with normal skis.

5. One more extreme sport is ice-climbing. As the name suggests, the followers of this activity climb glaciers with the help of an ice axe and a great deal of special equipment. Not just equipment but incredible physical and mental strength is required, plus ability to work closely with other team members in dangerous situations.

6. Why do people go in for such dangerous sports? Some people say that they seek adventure and extraordinary emotions; others want to escape from monotonous everyday life and problems.
