Notes:

Sole proprietorship – одноосібна власність

assurance – впевненість

Proprietorship.

1. The sole proprietorship dates back to the earliest economic system. It is characterized by a single owner, or, as its name implies, a sole proprietor. It is the most common form of business ownership in the USA today. There are roughly 20 million business firms in the country. About 7 out of 10 are proprietorships. Being the most common, however, does not mean being the most important.

2. The typical proprietorships would be, first of all, service industries, such as restaurants, candy stores, family farmers, or filling stations, different repair shops and so on.

3. The sole proprietorships have evident advantages. They are the easiest of all forms of business ownership to organize and are the least complex. The proprietor has all of the profits from the business. It is also relatively easy for the sole proprietor to get credits on favorable terms. Besides it is a non- tax paying business.

4. The sole proprietorship has certain disadvantages. First is its unlimited liability. The sole proprietor is legally responsible for all business, business debts and obligations. The sole proprietor is usually the sole manager, and he is forced to make all decisions in his business. There is one more negative point about it: there is no assurance of any long – range continuity of existence of the sole proprietorship. If the owner dies or becomes legally irresponsible, the business comes to an end.

5. Many of the disadvantages of the proprietorships could be overcome with positive planning. Good research in the planning stage can reveal opportunities for success.

VIII. Copy the following statements on paragraph one and mark with “T” if the statement is true or “F” if it is false.

1. Sole proprietorship can be owned by several people.

2. Sole proprietorship can’t be considered to be the most important business.

3. Proprietorship is one of the latest forms of economic system.

4. 3 out of 10 businesses are other forms than proprietorship.
