The traditional definition of auditing is a review and an evaluation of financial records by a second set of accountants. An internal audit is a control by a company's own accountants, checking for completeness, (1) exactness and reliability. Among other things, internal auditors are looking for (2) departures from (3) a firm's established methods for recording business transactions. In most

countries, the law requires all firms to have their accounts audited by an outside company. An (4) independent audit is thus a review of financial statements and accounting records by an accountant not belonging to the firm. The auditors have to (5) judge whether the accounts give what in Britain is known as a "true and fair view" and in the US as a "fair presentation" of the company's [corporation's] financial position. Auditors are appointed by a company's (6) most senior executives and advisors, whose choice has to be (7) approved by the (8) owners of the company's equity at the (9) company's yearly assembly. Auditors write an official audit report. They may also address a "management letter" to the directors, outlining (10) inadequacies and recommending improved operating procedures. This leads to the more recent use of the word "audit" as (11) an equivalent term for "control": (12) multinational companies, for example, might undertake inventory, marketing and technical audits. Auditing in this sense means (13)

verifying that general management (14) instructions are being (15) executed in branches, (16) companies which they control, etc.

The cost for borrowing a sum of money, usually calculated at a percentage rate over a period of time. For example, if you borrow $1,000 for a year at an annual interest rate of 10%, you would pay $100 in interest for a year's use of the money: $1,000 x.10 = $100.

You earn interest on bonds. In that case, the borrower is paying you interest to use the money you invested.

A type of security that pays a fixed amount of interest at a regular interval over a certain period of time. Bonds are essentially loans given to companies and government entities who promise to pay back the loan at a specified interest rate. Bonds are considered less risky investments than stocks. A bond's rating is like a person's credit rating. It gives you an idea of whether the company that issued the bond will be able to make its payments on the loan. As a bond holder, you receive that interest payment periodically.

For example, suppose you own a municipal $1,000 bond that pays 7% interest over 10 years. In this case, assuming you bought the bond at its par value of $1,000 and held it for 10 years, you would receive $70 a year (7% of $1,000) for 10 years. At the end of the 10 years, you would have received $700 in interest ($70 x 10 years), and you would also get the $1,000 back.

When interest rates are rising, bond prices go down; when rates are falling, bond prices rise.

Central banks supervise the banking system; fix the minimum interest rate; issue bank notes; control the money supply; influence exchange rates; and act as lender of last resort.

Commercial banks are businesses that trade in money. They receive and hold deposits in current and savings accounts, pay money according to customers' instructions, lend money, and offer investment advice, foreign exchange facilities, and so on. In some countries such as England these banks have branches in all major towns; in other countries there are smaller regional banks. Under American law, for example, banks can operate in only one state. Some countries have banks that were originally confined to a single industry, e.g. the Credit Agricole in France, but these now usually have a far wider customer base.

In some European countries, notably Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are Universal banks which combine deposit and loan banking with share and bond dealing, investment advice, etc. Yet even universal banks usually form a subsidiary, known as a finance house, to lend money - at several per cent over the base lending rate - for hire purchase or installment credit, that is, loans to consumers that are repaid in regular, equal monthly amounts.
