Pronouns

The Imperative Mood

I. Put the verb in the negative form of the imperative mood:

Model: Take this map!

Don’t take this map!

1. Look at him. 2. Take off your coat. 3. Smoke in this room. 4. Close your books. 5. Open the window. 6. Go to the library now. 7. Read her letter. 8. Leave the room, please. 9. Let us watch this film. 10. Let him do it.

II. Put the verb in the imperative mood according to the model:

Model: Tell him to close the door. > Close the door, please.

Tell him not to close the door. > Please don’t close the door.

1. Tell him to tell you the time (to send a letter, to come to classes on time, to be at home at this time, to say it again, to read the text again).

2. Tell him not to come here tomorrow (to leave now, to be late, to take those books, to go to the park now, to do this job).

III. Change the sentences according to the model:

Model: Shall we see this film? > Let us see this film.

Shall we go to the cinema after classes? (go to the snack-bar, have a break, take a bus, put the car there, see the doctor now, take a short rest, wait a little, give them a telephone call)

IV. Make up imperative sentences:

Ask your friend:

1. to find lesson 11;

2. to speak louder;

3. to go to the library;

4. to go to the blackboard;

5. to repeat the sentence twice;

6. to listen to the new text;

7. to write exercise 3 at home;

8. to look at the blackboard;

9. to show you the way to the theatre;

10. to put down the new words.

V. Make up negative imperative sentences:

Tell your friend:

1. not to leave the room;

2. not to close the window;

3. not to read the text;

4. not to make such a noise;

5. not to take the chalk;

6. not to smoke in the room;

7. not to open the door;

8. not to write this exercise;

9. not to talk so loudly;

10. not to be late next time.

VI. Open the brackets:

1. Let’s (to go) home.

3. It’s cold outside. Let’s (to put on) our coats.

4. Let them (to do) this themselves.

5. (to pass) me the salt, please!

VII. Translate into English:

I. Demonstrative pronouns:

I. Put the demonstrative pronouns in Plural:

1. This is an apple.

2. That is a knife.

3. This is a letter.

4. That is my friend.

5. This man is not a student.

6. That is not a desk.

7. Is this newspaper fresh? – Yes, it is.

8. Is that box empty? – No, it isn’t.

9. Does this gentleman come to see you very often?

10. Does that fellow know you?

II. Put the demonstrative pronouns in Singular:

1. These are matches. These matches are bad.

2. Those fellows are my classmates.

3. These are German magazines.

4. Those books are mine.

5. These are not letters.

6. Those are not your students.

7. Are these glasses?

8. Are those men his roommates?

9. Are these their note-books?

10. Are those desks or tables?

III. Translate into English:

II. Indefinite pronouns:

I. Fill in the blanks with the pronouns some or any:

1. Have you got … classes tomorrow morning?

4. Are there … apple-trees in the school garden?

5. Give me … time to think about it.

6. He drank … coffee and left the café.

II. Make the sentences:

a) interrogative:

1. You see something on the shelf.

2. We shall go out somewhere at the week-end.

4. There is somebody in the next room.

5. He has something interesting to tell us.

6. Your friend spent his holidays somewhere near Sochi.

7. You met somebody at that early hour.

8. I heard something about it.

b) negative:

8. Some of them know English.

III. Use the pronouns (adverbs) some, any, no, every or their derivatives:

III. Personal pronouns:

I. Find all the pronouns in the nominative and objective cases and translate the sentences into Russian:

1. Please, give me my note-book.

5. Mr. Brown teaches us English.

6. Practically I help her in her German every day.

II. Put the personal pronouns in the brackets in the objective case:
