My College

How I spend my free time

I go to College six days a week, so I have only one day off, Sunday. On Sunday I get up later than on weekdays. In winter I go skiing after breakfast. I ski in the park which is near my house. I come back home for dinner. After dinner I have a short rest and then I do some my homework for the next week. In the evening I sometimes go to see my friends. We like to listen to music together or see a video film.

In spring and in summer I prefer to spend my day off in the open air. On Saturday night I usually go to the country house where my parents live. There is a river not far from the house. The water in it is cool and clean and I like to swim in it. There are woods on both banks of the river where I like to walk if the weather is fine or look for berries and mushrooms. When the day is rainy I stay indoors reading and watching TV.

Early in autumn my college mates and I usually go hiking. We leave on Saturday afternoon and return on Sunday evening. We learn how to make a fire and cook food, how to find fresh water in the woods. At night we sit by the fire, talk, recite poems, sing and dance. We spend the night in the tents and the next morning walk on. When we return home we are so tired that I usually go to bed without supper. I try to read a book, but I go to sleep before I have read half a page.

There are many colleges in our country. They are situated in different cities and towns. If you want to acquire a specialty you can enter a college where you receive a specialty which you like and besides a secondary education as well.

Our college is situated on Freedom Avenue, 67A. It is called Krasnoyarsk Radio-Electronics, Economics and Management. It was founded in 1954 and in 2004 we celebrated its 50th anniversary.

There are full-time, part-time and extra-mural departments in our college. Full-time students must attend lessons. Part-time students combine their studies and work; they must work in the day-time and attend lessons in the evening. Extra-mural department students study themselves, often such students live and work in one town and study in another.

Different specialties are taught in our college, such as radio apparatus construction, technology of machine engineering, economics.

At our college students combine theoretical study with practical work at the workshops and plants. The themes of their diploma projects are closely connected with the needs of industry.

Studying at our college gives a solid background in all spheres of knowledge and prepares for practical work. The main task of our college is to train specialists of high skill.

Among the many friends I have I would like to speak about Sergei, my best friend. He is twenty-one and he finished our college two years ago. Sergei is about two meters tall and the girls find him handsome.

When he studied at college, Sergei organized a pop music group. He began to show interest in music in early childhood because he comes from a family of musicians. Music is our common interest. Sergei has a good collection of recordings of music to all tastes. We listen to music together and he taught me to appreciate good music. He can play the piano very well and I enjoy his playing. He likes modern music too.

Besides music Sergei is keen on sports. He is a member of the college sports club, and plays in the college football team which takes part in the annual intercollege competitions.

Sergei is a very good friend, though he is quick-tempered at times, he is reliable and can always be trusted. His friends often turn to him for help and advice, and he is always willing to share with them all he has: books, tapes, video films and other things. I have learnt quite a number of useful things from him.

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, more organized and better disciplined. It unites peoples of different classes and nationalities.

More people do sports on their personal initiative. They go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volley-ball, football, body-building, etc. All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields. Sport is paid much attention to in our educational establishments. Gymnastics is a part of children`s daily activity in the kindergartens. Physical culture is a compulsory subject at school and colleges.

Professional sport is also paid much attention to in our republic. There are different sport societies, clubs and complexes. The most famous of them are the Olympic complexes “Raubichi”, “Staiki”, “Dinamo” stadium, etc. They are used for international and world competitions.

In the last years Belarusian sport has reached a leading place in the in the world sports movement and in particular, in the Olympic Games. Major victories have been won by our gymnasts, weight-lifters, wrestlers, chess and tennis players. We are all proud of these victories.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our republic but football, gymnastics and tennis enjoy the greatest popularity.

As for me I go in for table tennis (ping-pong). It needs mobility, liveliness and much energy. It keeps a person in a good form. I have been playing tennis for five years, but the more I play the more I like it. I get a real joy taking part in competitions or simply playing with my friends. Sometimes I go to tennis courts. Certainly, it`s a great distance between my manner of playing and such favourites as Boris Becker, Per Korda, but I do my training with great pleasure and hope to play as well as our best players do.
