Exercise 1. Read the conversation between Liz and Alex. Put the verbs into the correct form.

Liz: Alex! I’m so glad to see you! What … (you/ do) these days?

Alex: I … (train) to be a supermarket manager.

Liz: Really? … (you/enjoy) it?

Alex: Yes, it’s rather interesting. What about you?

Liz: Well, actually I … (not/work) at the moment. I … (try) to find a job but it’s not easy. Frankly speaking, I am busy with other things now.

Exercise 3. Complete the sentences using one of these verbs: increase, make, change,

rise, improve, stay, try

The Present Simple – Present Continuous

The Present Simple употребляется для выражения действия постоянного, повторяющегося, не соотнесенного с моментом речи. Strong wind often blows here in winter. – Зимой здесь часто бывает сильный ветер.

The Present Continuous употребляется для выражения действия временного, происходящего в момент речи или в настоящий период. The wind is blowing hard. Shut the window, please. - Дует сильный ветер. Закрой, пожалуйста, окно.

Некоторые глаголы не могут иметь форму Continuous, т.к. выражают не процесс, а состояние, и употребляются в форме Simple:

1. Глаголы чувственного восприятия: to see, to hear

2. Глаголы умственной деятельности: to know, to believe, to think (to have an opinion), to doubt, to feel (to have an opinion), to guess, to imagine, to mean, to realize, to recognize, to remember, to suppose, to understand;

3. Глаголы, выражающие эмоциональное состояние, желание: to love, to like, to dislike, to hate, to prefer, to want, to wish;

4. Глаголы, выражающие физические свойства объектов: to taste (to have a flavor), to smell (to give out a smell), to sound, to weigh (to have weight);

5. Глаголы, выражающие воздействие, влияние: to astonish, to impress, to please, to satisfy, to surprise;

6. Глаголы, выражающие абстрактные отношения: to be, to have, to contain, to depend, to belong, to concern, to consist of, to deserve, to fit, to include, to involve, to lack, to matter, to need, to owe, to own, to possess, to appear, to resemble, to seem.

Некоторые из вышеперечисленных глаголов могут использоваться в форме Continuous, но значение их при этом меняется:

to think	в значении «иметь мнение»:What do you think about this film? – Что ты думаешь об этом фильме?	в значении «думать, размышлять»:What are you thinking about? – О чем ты думаешь?
to have	в прямом словарном значении «обладать»: I have many friends. – У меня много друзей.	в переносном значении: John’s having a bath. – Джон принимает ванну.
to taste	в значении «иметь вкус»: This soup tastes delicious. – Этот суп вкусный.	в значении «пробовать на вкус»: He’s tasting the soup. – Он пробует суп.
to smell	в значении «иметь запах, пахнуть»: The flowers smell nice. – Цветы приятно пахнут.	в значении «нюхать»: She’s smelling the flowers. – Она нюхает цветы.

Exercise 4. Correct the mistakes if there are any.

1. The clock is striking, it's time to finish your studies.

2. They are understanding the problem now.

3. Where is John? — He prepares his lessons; he usually prepares them at that time.

4. They are glad to know that their son is coming home next week.

5. The evening is warm, but you are shivering. Is anything the matter? — Nothing serious, I am feeling cold.

6. Can I see Mr. Green? — I am sorry, you can't: he has dinner.

7. The soup is tasting delicious.

8. Now I am seeing what you are driving at.

9. He believes in God and is always going to church on Sundays.

10. I am hating to speak to him. He is always complaining and forgetting what to do.

11. They are being so nice to me at present. I am feeling they are liking me.

12. He often changes his political views. Now he is belonging to the Conservative Party.

13. Look! Somebody tries to open your car.

14. Oh, I won't take this dish. It is smelling awful.

15. How can I recognize him? I haven't met him. — He is wearing a yellow leather jacket and green jeans.

16. She usually drinks tea in the morning, but today she drinks coffee.

18. He is wanting to buy a car, but first he must learn to drive, so he is taking his driving lessons.

19. I can't stand him. He is liking to mock at people. He is always laughing at us when we meet.
