Exercise 1. Prepare a 10-20 minute motivating speech on one of the suggested topics. Choose one of the models to make the best of your speech
The structure of public speech Composition of public speech 1. Exposition a) turning to the addressee; b) general idea of the story (narration), encourage people’s interest; c) generally accepted truth is introduced, try to use aphoristic form; d) place, time, main characters of action. 2. The very story Following the natural order of actions or flow of thoughts until the climax of the story is reached. 3. The end of the story Denouement, conclusions. (remember rhetoric formulae whenever story-telling).
The main principles of creating an interesting story (it must be): 1) simple, clear, brief; 2) true to life, reasonable, believable; 3) with gradual increase of interest. Bear in mind: The structure ofthe speech may varyregarding the purpose of a public performance. Study the following structure models suggested by D. Carnegie. Speech purpose: Call for actions 1. State the facts. 2. Considerations made on the basis of the facts. 3. Call for actions. Another variant: 1. Make auditorium interested and attentive. 2. Gain people’s confidence. 3. State the facts and explain the advantages of your motion. 4. Give strong arguments evoking people to action. Speech purpose: Request for cooperation 1. Demonstrate a negative side of a phenomenon. 2. Set forth the ways to correct the negative effect. 3 Request for cooperation. Speech purpose: Request for help 1. Represent the situation which is to be improved. 2. Set forth the remedy for improving the situation. 3. Explain the reasons why people must help.
1. Motivate your friends to go on excursion to European country with you. 2. Invite students to join your volunteer organization. 3. Persuade people to go on a football match with you. 4. Motivate people to buy products from your shop. 5. Motivate people to invest money in a business project. 6. Persuade people to join a political party. 7. Ask businessmen to give you money for the development of a business project. 8. Persuade people to donate money to a charity organization. 9. Persuade your employees to work extra time on the week end. 10. Invite people to study on your language courses. 11. Persuade people to vote for your candidate on the elections. 12. Motivate your neighbors to clean the corridor staircases in the house. 13. Invite your friends to visit a museum of fine arts. 14. Convince your partner to change the conditions of your cooperation for your onw benefit. 15. Convince your friend to take a kitten (a puppy). 16. Convince to read a certain book. 17. Convince your husband to buy you a new fur-coat. 18. Convince your friend to stop smoking. 19. Convince your children to choose a certain profession. 20. Convince your parents to buy you a car.
