Monologic speech
Exercise 2. Prepare to participate in debates on one of the topics. Exercise 1. In a small group of three to six people discuss one of the following topics. 1. Parents’ responsibilities. 2. Misunderstandings between the older and the younger generations. 3. What makes a successful marriage. 4. Women’s’ role in modern society. 5. The role of books (newspapers, magazines, radio, television, movies) in our lives. 6. Why sports are popular. 7. The population explosion. 8. How we can improve our natural environment. 9. Goals of developing countries. 10. European Union achievements and problems. 11. Euthanasia. 12. Qualities of a good interpreter (teacher). 13. Features of English which non-native speakers find difficult. 14. The advantages and disadvantages of bilingual (multilingual) society.
Bear in mind: Before participating in debates take some time to prepare the necessary information. While participating in debates be ready to act as a spokesman on the “pro” or “con” side of an issue manifesting your point of view giving arguments and counter arguments to your opponents.
1. Childhood is the happiest time of life. 2. It is better to marry when you are very young. 3. It is better to marry for love than for money. 4. Men should do some housework to help their wives. 5. No family should have more than two children. 6. Children should be taught to read and write before they enter elementary school. 7. Television does more harm than good. 8. Mothers who work outside the home neglect their children. 9. Parents are too permissive with their children now. 10. The younger generation knows best. 11. Women should be allowed to enter any profession they choose. 12. Money is the most necessary thing in life. 13. The education system should be reformed. 14. Teaching machines are better than teachers. 15. All schools should be co-educational. 16. Examinations are unnecessary. 17. Travel is the best education. 18. People are not as polite as they used to be. 19. We have too much leisure. 20. Living in the city is better than living in the country. 21. There are many benefits in owning a car. 22. Dangerous sports should be prohibited. 23. Environment has more effect on the individual than heredity. 24. Books, plays and films should be censored. 25. Fashion contributes much to the society. 26. Old traditions prevent progress. 27. A universal language is possible. 28. It is useless to explore the past. 29. Civilization brings happiness. 30. Man should continue space exploration.
Study: According to classical rhetoric the ideas should be placed in the following order: 1) The description of inanimate beings: - the definition of the subject, its belonging to type or kind; - semantic model whole-part; - external data (form, material); - habitat place of the subject; - functions of the subject; - documents, evidences about the subject by other authors. 2) The description of animate beings: - the definition of the being, its belonging to type or kind; - peculiarities, appearance; - behavior, style or way of life; - character, other peculiarities; - usefulness. To give a creative description of a subject, the speech is divided into three parts: the introduction, the very story, the end.
