Language practice: developing communicative skills in the use of a new vocabulary, topic presentations.

CHRISTMAS SPECULATIONS

Ann: Hi, Ben! Tomorrow is Christmas. Have you already got prepared for the celebration?

Ben: Oh, sure. I’ve bought presents. Mom is cooking delicious things now. And you?

A: I’m not preparing for it. I don’t like Christmas much.

B: Really? Why?

A: You see, Ben, Christmas is the saddest time of the year. It is cold, and everyone's trying to get some heat to their hearts, but very few can actually do it. For many, Christmas is a time to be spent with friends and relatives, to put as much food and wine as possible within their already full-filled stomachs.

B: You may be right, Anne. But still for most it is only a time of recapitulation, of remembrance of how much things we wanted to do and we couldn't, of how much love we wanted to give and receive and we gave it not and received it not.

A: For me, Christmas is a time of silence and loneliness, of tears that get frozen in their way out, of painful screams that never can go out because they would sound too much horrible….

B: I don’t understand. You are being so tragic! What’s up, dear?

A: Well, you see, Jim and I… we broke up. It was terrible. It is the Christmas eve when I became miserable! While for many Christmas is a time to ran into the stores to buy some happiness and to wait for presents that would hopefully give them a bit of that happiness they need, for me Christmas is the saddest and most painful time of the year.

B: Oh, Ann, you are just being wrong! Christmas is the time for hope and expectation. Wish Jim to come back and holy Christmas will make your dream come true. Merry Christmas, Anne!

Exercise 2. Dramatize the dialogue in different moods. As if you were:

· a yard-keeper and a farmer;

· a bachelor and a married man;

· a drunkard and a psychologist.
