Non-store retailers are retailers that do not sell in conventional store facilities. Instead they sell door-to-door, through the mail, or in vending machines.

A door-to-door retailer is one that sells directly to consumers in their homes. The seller’s representative calls on the potential customer at home and demonstrates the product. If a sale is made, she or he writes up the order and often delivers the product to the purchaser.

Avon is the world’s largest direct-selling retailer. Avon representatives sell cosmetics, fragrances and toiletries, jewelry, and accessories in consumers’ homes.

A mail-order retailer is one that solicits orders by mailing catalogues to potential customers. To make a purchase, the customer fills out an enclosed order form and mails it to the firm. Lately, more and more mail-­order firms are taking orders via telephone calls and charging the orders to customers’ credit cards.

Vending Machines dispense convenience goods automatically when customers deposit the appropriate amount of money. Vending machines do not require sales personnel, and they permit twenty-four-hour service. They can be placed in convenient locations in office buildings, educational institutions, motels and hotels, shopping malls, and service stations.

The machines make available a wide assortment of goods. They can supply candy, cigarettes, soups, sandwiches, fresh fruit, yogurt, chewing gum, postage stamps, hot and cold beverages, perfume and cosmetics, etc.
