1. Mr. Smith goes for a walk and meets an old friend he hasn’t seen for almost 20 years.

“I’ve gotten married since we last met. We have a little daughter – here she is.” The little girl comes up and is introduced to Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith says: “What’s your name?”

“My name is the same as my mother’s”, answered the girl.

“Ah!” says Mr. Smith, “then your name is Margaret.”

“Yes”, says the little girl.

Try to guess how Mr. Smith understood the little girl’s name was Margaret.

(The thing is that Mr. Smith’s friend is a woman – it’s natural that he knows her name. The word “friend” can mean both a man and a woman).

2. An English teacher wrote these words on the whiteboard: “woman without her man is nothing”. The teacher then asked the students to punctuate the words correctly. The men wrote: “Woman, without her man, is nothing”. The women wrote: “Woman! Without her, man is nothing”.
