NATIONAL TRANSPORT UNIVERSITY History and structure. The existence of the National Transport University began in November, 1944, when it was established as the Kyiv Automobile and Highway Institute (KAHI).

At that time student training was carried out only at two faculties such as the Department of Road Construction and Automobile-Mechanic, which trained specialists in the following areas: motorways, bridges, automobile and automobile facilities, road-building machines and mechanisms. In August, 1994 the Kyiv Automobile and Highway Institute received government accreditation and the status of a technical university, the highest fourth level of accreditation and the name of Ukrainian Transport University (UTU). In 2000 UTU was granted the status of a national higher education institution and the present name―National Transport University (NTU).

Currently there are four institutes within the University: the Institute of Correspondence Education and Distance Learning, the Institute of Transport Economics and Business, the Institute of Pre-University Preparation and International Cooperation, the Research Institute of Transport and Construction Technologies. The university’s four departments are: the Automobile Mechanic Department, the Department of Road-Building Materials and Chemistry, the Department of Economics, Management and Law, and the Department of Transport and Information Technologies.

In 2000 the Lviv Education and Consulting Center (with fourth-level accreditation) formed part of NTU. In 2004 Nadvirnyanskyi college of the first level of accreditation and Barskyi automobile and highway technical school of the first level of accreditation formed part of National Transport University. In October, 2003 the International Education Centre for Information Technologies was formed on the basis of NTU.

The University has research laboratories and research centres, whose work is supervised by the scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The University has over 300 scholars in staff; among them: 25 Academicians and Corresponding Members of Academies of Sciences and Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, 6 Honoured Employees in the field of Science and Technology of Ukraine, 5 Honoured Transport Employees of Ukraine, 4 Honoured Employees of Education of Ukraine. Many lecturers have become Ukrainian State Prize Laureates in the field of science and technology.

Students study in either the full-time program or in the extramural departments (by correspondence). The University provides postgraduate courses leading to the degrees of Candidate of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences. Professional training is carried out at the post graduate courses of Physics and Mathematics, Technical Sciences, and Economic Sciences.

University life. Students are granted admission to the University by independent testing performance and exams. University life is a complicated and exciting experience. Right after admission, they are issued a student card. Students receive stipends and scholarships. They may apply for and receive financial aid to pay tuition and other costs of the university.

A student’s primary concern is to learn. An academic year is from September to July. A student studies for 4 years. An additional one-year course after graduation can lead to the degree of Master. The graduates are granted a specialist degree and diplomas.

Professional training of students is provided by the teaching staff. The University strives to inform students about established principles of knowledge as well as the most recent developments in academic research. Instruction takes place in auditoriums, lecture halls, laboratories, sports grounds, gymnasiums and other settings.

University provides students with books and relevant studying materials. Libraries with computer rooms are also available. The University offers a range of extracurricular activities that can enhance the overall experience of university students. It has programmes in football, basketball, tennis, track and other sports. Students participate in student government, which allocate funds to various student organizations such as newspapers, drama groups, etc.

Many university teachers, post graduate students, masters take part in the international conferences, forums, and exhibitions. The materials of the teachers, post graduates and students’ reports at the international conferences are often published in a number of collections of the scientific works and other international editions.
