The most common type of residence hall is the traditional residence hall, which houses boys separate from girls. Coeducational residence halls accommodate both boys and girls, usually living on different floors. However, an arrangement with boys and girls living on the same floor but in separate rooms is not uncommon.

The most common form of residence-hall arrangement is with two students in one room. Because many university students today come from homes where they did not share a room, the residence hall may provide the first occasion where students have a roommate. Positive roommate relationships are important for both the emotional and intellectual well-being of students. A number of plans have been organized to improve the chances that roommates will be compatible. One is to assign rooms on the basis of personal habits such as neatness, or sleep habits, and to match the students on the basis of their responses to specially designed questions regarding their personal habits and their pattern of room use. These systems are based on the premise that the more homogeneous the roommates, the greater the likelihood that they will be compatible. However, research shows that the most successful form of roommate matching occurs when students themselves choose the person with whom they wish to live.

Educators who work in this area are primarily focused on improving the quality of student life, increasing the level of student learning, and building a sense of community among students in the residence hall. Professionals who work in housing operations are principally concerned with the daily management, maintenance, construction, and cleanliness of residence halls. Professionals who work in the area of room assignments are responsible for assigning students to the rooms, matching roommates, making room changes, and monitoring the occupants of various facilities. Normally these three functions—residence life, housing, and assignments—are managed by a director of housing and residence life, under the supervision of the division of student affairs.
