Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (MBT).

Challenger 2 is the main battle tank (MBT) currently in service with the British Army and the Royal Army of Oman. Challenger 2 entered service with the British Army in 1998 and is expected to remain in service until 2035.

Challenger 2 MBT was built by the British company which advertises it as the world’s most reliable MBT although military operations in desert conditions have exposed significant problems. As of January 2008, two Challenger 2s have been damaged and one destroyed (by a friendly fire engagement by another Challenger 2) in combat.

This tank has excellent battlefield mobility. It can travel across rough terrain at 40 km/h, and on roads it has a maximum speed of 59 km/h (37 mph). The tank is fitted with Chobham armor and weighs 62. 500 kilograms. It is 3.5 meters wide and 2.49 meters high. The approximate length of the tank is 8.33 meters (11.50 m with gun forward). The primary armament consists of a Royal Ordnance 120mm gun called L30. The secondary armament includes coaxial 7.62mm gun (chain gun) and 7.62mm L37A2 machine gun. Challenger 2 MBT has a diesel engine. It has a crew of four; the commander, the gunner, the loader, and the driver.

The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank produced by the German company and since 2003 also license-produced by Spanish company. The Leopard 2 is one of the most successful projects of the last generation of MBTs, with over 3,200 units produced. It is currently in service with the armies of more than 10 European countries (Germany, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Finland, etc.), as well as non-European countries such as Canada, Chile and Singapore. Greece ordered 170 Leopard 2MBTs, for delivery between 2006 and 2009.

The tank has the ability to engage moving targets while moving over rough terrain. It can drive through water 4 meters deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters without any preparation and climb vertical obstacles over 1 meter high. The Leopard 2 MBT can travel across rough terrain at 55 km/h, and on roads it has a maximum speed of 72 km/h. It is 2.48 m high, 3.7 m wide and 7.7 m long. It weighs 55,150kg. The Leopard 2’s primary armament is a 120mm smoothbore gun called L55. The secondary armament includes a 7.62 mm machine gun and a 7.62 mm antiaircraft machine gun. The tank is powered with a turbo-charged multi-fuel V12 diesel engine. The Leopard 2 MBT has the crew of four.
