Situation 1. Leaving a Message

Student A:

You want to speak to Ms Braun about your account with her company, W&W. If Ms Braun isn't in the office, leave the following information:

·Your name

·Telephone number: 347-8910 (or use your own)

·Calling about changing conditions of your contract with W&W

·You can be reached until 5 o'clock at the above number. If Ms Braun calls after 5 o'clock, she should call 458-2416

Student B:

You are a receptionist at W&W. Student A would like to speak to Ms Braun, but she is out of the office. Take a message and make sure you get the following information:

·Name and telephone number - ask student A to spell the surname

·Message the reason student A would like to speak to Ms Braun

·How late Ms Braun can call student A at the given telephone number

 

Student A:

You are a salesperson for Red Inc. You are telephoning a client who you think might be interested in buying your new line of office supplies. Discuss the following information with your client:

·New line of office supplies including: copy-paper, pens, stationary, mouse-pads and white boards

·You know the customer hasn't ordered any new products during this past year

·Special discount of 15% for orders placed before next Monday

·Any order placed before Monday will not only receive the discount, but also have its company logo printed on the products at no extra charge

Student B:

You work in an office and receive a telephone call from your local office supplier. As a matter fact, you need some new office supplies, so you are definitely interested in what the salesperson has to offer. Talk about the following:

·New pens, stationary and white boards

·Do they have any special offers?

·You would like to place an order for 200 packages of copy-paper.

 

Grammar revision: English Tenses (Passive Voice)

Revise English tenses of the passive voice (see Appendix 5, p.132) before doing exercises.

Ex. 1. Read and translate the following sentences, paying attention to the verbs in the passive voice.

1. Ms Daven was offered the job and accepted it.

2. After the survey was prepared, Jacob distributed it and tabulated the results.

3. The application was signed and returned in the enclosed envelope.

4. Ingrid was hired after she had been interviewed.

5. Mr Waltz and Mr Zhukhov received promotions and were transferred.

6. He applied for the job and was given an interview.

7. The new advanced computer system has been installed today.

8. Before we introduced a new product a thorough market study had been made.

9. The report was thoroughly researched, well written and carefully edited.

10. The budget is being studied carefully.

 

Ex.2. Transform the following sentences according to the model.

 

Model: He found several opportunities for saving money. – Several opportunities for saving money were found by him.

1. The secretary proofread all the correspondence before mailing it.

2. We held our first meeting on Monday.

3. She left the message on answering machine.

4. Treadlock Tire Company built a plant in Detroit.

5. The educated experienced programmer entered the data into the computer.

 

Ex. 3. Paraphrase the following sentences according to the model.

 

Model: We must finish the work today. – The work must be finished today.

She can do it tomorrow. – It can be done tomorrow.

1. The managers must work out new advertising campaign.

2. It is necessary to complete the project till May.

3. You can enlarge the number of participants.

4. It is possible to circulate the newsletter today.

5. He must do all the calculations.

 

Ex. 4. Open the brackets using the appropriate form of the verb either in active or passive voice.

1. Jane Brown (to be) a very dedicated employee. 2. She (join) the company last year as the sales representative. 3. Her talent soon (to become) apparent. 4. Sales in her area (to increase) rapidly. 5. She often (to exceed) her monthly sales quota. 6. Ms Brown’s success (to notice) by her superiors. 7. The regional manager (impress) with her work. 8. The General Manager immediately (to promote) her to assistant manager of a district office. 9. In her new job Jane (to do) extremely well. 10. Next month she (to consider) for another promotion. 11. It certainly (to be) a wise decision to hire Ms Brown. 12. The terms of the contract (to discuss) on the telephone last week. 13. The secretary (to take) a message as Mr Brown was out. 14.
