Exercise 6. Translate the given sentences with the modal verbs into English




(0) The evidence must be presented. – Доказательство нужно представить.

This wire must not be touched. – Этот провод нельзя трогать.

This can be done. – Это можно сделать.

This cannot be done. – Этого нельзя делать.

1. This answer must be written on one side of the paper only.

2. These books must not be taken away.

3. This question can easily be answered.

4. His behavior cannot be explained.

5. There are some verbs that cannot be used in the Passive.

6. Their opinion must be taken into consideration.

7. This result can be improved.

8. These mistakes must be corrected.

 

Exercise 7. Translate the following sentences into Russian, paying attention on the verbs in Passive:

1. The seminar was attended by all the students of the group. 2. At the University lectures and seminars are followed by examinations. 3. The old methods of research were replacedwith new ones.4. He was greatly influenced by other people’s opinions.5. The General Assembly was attended by all the member-states. 6. The summit meeting was followed by a press-conference.7. All his questions were answered. 8. The demonstrators were joined by their supporters.

Exercise 8. Read and translate, paying attention on the following phrases:

the …the – чем …тем; as … as … - такой же как; less … than … - меньше … чем; not so … as … - не такой … как.

The more we study, the more we know. The more we know, the more we forget. The more we forget, the less we know. The less we know, the less we forget. the less we forget, the more we know. So, why study?

1. The more you read, the faster you’ll learn to understand books and papers in foreign language.

2. The more we knew them, the less we liked them.

3. The less you talk, the better.

4. The more I thought about it, the less I understood.

5. His speech was as long as it was dull.

6. This text is not so difficult, as that one.

7. The English language is not so difficult, as the German language.

Exercise 9. Put the sentences in Passive Voice, paying attention on the prepositions:
