Warming up:Explain this proverb and give examples “Choose an author as you choose a friend”

Grammar: Modal verbs: Can, could, be able to (ability and possibility) [7.pp134]

 

Can is a modal verb. It only has a present, past and conditional form. For example, She can’t come tonight. She is ill. They couldn’t wait because they were in a hurry. Could you open the window, please. Use “be able to” in the present, past and future, Present Perfect and as a Gerund or Infinitive. For example, I’ll be able to practice my English in England. She has been able to speak French since she was a child.(as Present Perfect) I’d like to be able to ski.(as an Infinitive) I love being able to sleep late at weekends.(as a Gerund)

 

Practice. Guess the sentence. Student A. Look at sentences 1-5 and complete them with the correct from of be able to+ a verb

Read your sentences to the student B. If it’s not the same, try again until B tells you “That’s right”
