BOILER SHUTTING-DOWN

Shutting-down of the plant may occur in two ways: first, a scheduled shut-down for planned maintenance, or lack of load; second, a forced shut-down due to failure of equipment.

The boiler is taken off the line at once in case of water loss, tube overheating, and rupture, soot burning in flues, fire in the boiler-room, brickwork collapse and failure of all feeding systems. If leaks occur, the chief engineer decides whether to take the boiler out of service or not. Small leaks are eliminated by inserting a plug in the tube. This expands and makes a very tight fit. Small holes are welded.

If the water drops out of sight, open the lower try cock and allow the dry system to escape. Shut off burners, forced and induced draft fans after the furnace ventilation for 2-3 minutes.

Shut the fuel oil heating and close the fuel pump valve. Shut off the boiler from the steam line and open safety valves to decrease steam pressure. When boiler cools off up to 70-80ºC., it should be drained and the interior may now be examined.

The following items constitute major servicing and maintenance during a shut-down of the steam generating equipment:

- open up the drums and inspect for scale and corrosion;

- inspect tubes for scaling and corrosion. Clean scale from tubes and drum;

- inspect interior of boiler for refractory requiring repair, and for slagged tubes. Clean off heavy slag deposits;

- the water column should be taken down and cleaned at any time that deposits are found in it;

- inspect induced draft fan for erosion of fan blades; repair by replacing blades or by building up worn spots by welding;

- inspect packing of all valves and repack those requiring it;

- when the unit is closed up again, subject pressure parts to a hydrostatic test, and check for leakage at tube joints; tighten these before putting the unit to service.
