SENTENSE PATTERN:

1. Sentences can consist of one clause:

e.g. I travel a lot.

But we often make sentences with two or more clauses:

a) we can join two equal clauses

e.g. I am really disappointed about the delays and Harry is furious.

b) one clause may express the main idea (main clause) and another clause develops the main idea (subordinate clause)

e.g. There are delays with mail order catalogue (main clause) because we are having problems with new IT system (subordinate clause).

c) relative clauses give information about the noun(s) in the main clause

e.g. This is the department store which Paterson owns.

2. Because of the strict word order of the English sentence the type of the clause is easily recognized. This type is connected with the place of a clause: if it takes the place of a subject – subjective clause, object – object clause, etc.

e.g. That he is a recognized traveler is known to everybody. (subjective clause)

The students know that smoking is not permitted at the institute. (object clause)

3. In objective and relative clauses a relative pronoun can be deleted if a subordinate clause has its own subject.

e.g. Parents can be sure (that) the child safety seats are available in the

coach. The person (who) he is speaking to is the flight attendant. There will be a rest stop in Brighton (which) we are going to visit.

The World Tourist Organizationforecasts European tourismwill double in 20 years.
