Ex. 24. Listen to the text, then read it Give the main idea of it.

(1) Before the Second World War hardly a quarter of the population of the British Isles ever went away on holiday at all. During one week of the year when most working people had their official annual holiday they used to stay at home.

(3) The simple opportunity to stay in bed an hour or two longer on a weekday morning constituted a sort of holiday in itself, as well as an escape from boring (making a pleasant change too), repetitive work. “Going away” used to mean at best a day trip to a seaside resort.

(5) The social revolution that has taken place in Britain since 1945 is nowhere more evident than in British attitudes to holidays and leisure. A holiday, regarded as a reward (= награда) for hard work, or leisure time to be enjoyed only by the rich, came to be seen as a something to which everybody was entitled (= had the official right).

(7) Mass tourism abroad was the creation of new people who realized (= understood) the business opportunity that existed in travel. They understood their customers' nervousness about foreign travel and saw commercial possibilities of the mass package holiday, where everything would be taken care of-from leaving home to returning. They helped to find capital to finance the building of hotels. They bought old aircrafts to provide cheap charter flights. They took advantage of the very low costs of living in countries like Spain and Portugal so cleverly that British holidaymakers could live like millionaires. By the late 50s the package holiday had changed entirely the average Briton's attitude to both the holiday and “abroad”. All this was very damaging (= destroying) to the traditional British holiday. The holiday camp used to provide standardized accommodation with everybody eating the same food at the same time, organized games and everything done to a strict (= exact) schedule.

The new British holidaymakers wanted none of it. The alternative was a custom-built (= по индивидуальному заказу) hotel rooms with unimaginable (= невообразимый) luxuries like private bathrooms, balconies facing blue sea, and champagne with your breakfast if you fancied (= зд. хотеть) it.

All this expansion took place despite the periodic economic crises. The amount of money which a tourist could take abroad was reduced to £ 25 at that time. This seems ridiculously (= смехотворный) low sum nowadays, but it made hardly any difference to the number of people going abroad.
