LETTER “U”

1. Mind the pronunciation of the letter “U”:

[u:] [ju:] [a] [ə:] [juə] [uə]

rude tune under turn cure sure

2. But some other vowel combinations give the same pronunciation:

1 [a] month, come, gloves, mother,

2. [ju:] few, queue, feudal, suit,

3. [u:] mood, goose,

4. [ə:] stir, term, circle,

5. [uə] poor.

Ex. 12. Group the following words according to the type of the pronunciation of the letter “ u ”. Listen and check. Use vocabulary for help.

1. nurse, bruise, thunder, Thursday; mute, cute, accurate, due, true; sun; purse, blue, miraculous, mud; murder; utter, utmost; cut; but; butter; nude; fusion, fuel; build.

2. four, soup, cruise, knew, few, sew, new, chew, clue, circus, should; could; food; booth, brother, bruit; surprise.

Ex. 14. Listen to the poem.Repeat it after the native speaker. How many rules of pronunciation can you explain now in underlined words? Don't be very critical.

Won’t you tell me why it’s true, Why is break not rhymed with weak? We say sew, but also few? And the maker of a verse, Cannot rhyme his horse with worse? Beard is not the same as heard, Cord is different from word, Cow is cow, but low is low, Mould is not pronounced like could, Why is done, but gone and lone – Is there any reason known?

Shoe is never rhymed with toe, Think of hose and dose, and lose, And think of goose and yet of c hoose, Think of comb and tomb, and bomb, Doll and roll and home and some. And since pay is rhymed with say, Why not paid with said, I pray? Think of flood and food and god, To sum up, it seems to me, That sounds and letters don’t agree.

1. When like is used as a preposition, it is always followed by a noun. It means “ similar to ”/ “ the same as ”, but not really the same.

e.g. I look like my mother.

They have so many animals. Their house is like a zoo.

What star sign are you? I’m Scorpio like you.

Their children are long and bossy. I don’t like kids like that.

2. As can also be used as a preposition followed by a noun. It expresses the job, function or use of a person or a thing.

e.g. I worked as a waitress over the holiday.

We use our garage as a storage place.

She went to a party dressed as a nun.

3. When as is used as a conjunction, it is followed by a subject and a verb.

e.g. Do as I say and sit down.

As you know, we’ve leaving tomorrow at 10.00.

Note: Remember: as usual = usually

e.g. Peter and Pat arrived late, as usual.

4. We also use as in comparison when we compare equal things.

e.g. My daughter is as tall as me.

She works in the same office as me.
