Герундий как обстоятельство уступки (concession).С предлогомin spite of.

Конструкция с герундием – это наличие существительного (в общем или притяжательном падеже) или местоимения (в притяжательном или объектном падеже) перед герундием. Например, I don’t like your behaving like that (местоимение в притяжательном падеже + герундий). I don’t like Ann’s asking so many questions (сущ-ное в притяж. падеже). The idea of him going away terrified me (местоимение в объектном падеже (то есть не именительном, а любом другом) + герундий). Наличие местоимения или существительного перед герундием указывает, кто совершает действие герундия. Этот «деятель» может не совпадать (и чаще всего так и бывает) и подлежащим предложения. I remember his telling me this story. Я помню, что ОН мне РАССКАЗЫВАЛ эту историю. Поэтому обычно в учебниках пишут, что герундий и предыдущее местоимение/существительное находятся в «предикативных отношениях». Это значит, что она взаимодействуют как «подлежащее» и «сказуемое» между собой, то есть «деятель» и его «действие».

Конструкция употребляется так же, как и «автономный» герундий, в функциях дополнения (прямого и предложного), определения (раскрывает смысл предыдущего существительного) или обстоятельства различных видов.
