Metallurgist city The town of science and education THE TOWNS OF THE MURMANSK REGION
By its size, Apatity is the second town in the Murmansk region with population of 70 thousand. The largest scientific center in the North of Russia, inclusive nine institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences is located here. During last decade the town has grown into significant educational center of the Murmansk region with opened branches of many Russian institutions of higher education. Lots of interesting exhibitions contributing to the development of economics, enterpreneurship and folk crafts are conducted in the town. We recommend you to visit "Stone Flower" exhibition-festival. Here you will be delighted with rare minerals from private collections of geologists of our land and articles made by jewelers, stone-carvers and folk craftsmen.
Monchegorsk is the third largest town in the Murmansk region with population of 63 thousand. It was founded in 1963. Its main points of interest are "Severonikel" industrial complex, one of the largest world’s manufacturers of non-ferrous metals, and cathedral of the Ressurrection. You can learn more about history of the town if you visit the local History and Economy museum. Approaching Monchegorsk you can’t help paying attention to the absence of trees near the town, to the "scorched" surface of tundra. But not always it was here this way. The forest began noticeably deteriorate in the end of 60s, which was connected with the extension of production and transition to use the ore from Norilsk containing a plenty of sulfur. Despite of depression, more essential modifications were made in the beginning of 90s. The main contaminant of air – the melting shop of the combine was closed in the end of 90s.
Kandalaksha is the oldest town of the Murmansk region. The first record in chronicles about Kandalaksha dates from 1526. For a long time, the Kandalaksha monastery (built in 1532) along with Solovetsky monastery was the major landowner in the Murmansk land. The history of Kandalaksha keeps a lot of remarkable facts, including facts about frequent military skirmishes of local residents with Sveya "Evil people". The town of Kandalaksha is stretched on a coast of the White Sea – the cradle of Russian navigation. Today the port connects Kandalaksha with the entire world, and the Kandalaksha bay is one of the major points of interest not only of the town but also of the Murmansk region. The port of Kandalaksha is being developed nowadays.
