5 SS from the sentences below choose the statements which best summarize the article in the previous activity.

Answer C

6 SS discuss in groups French, British, American, Japanese customs of saying hello, having a business lunch, talking to strangers etc, compare them with the rules of behaviour of their nationality.

As for American people it’s difficult sometimes to accept their informal manners in public, for instance: American executives sometimes signal their feelings of ease and importance in their offices by putting their feet on the desk whilst on the telephone. They prefer to be casual and more informal, addressing somebody “Hi!” or “Have a nice day!” American waiters have a one-word imperative “Enjoy!” But if we consider them as business people they’re very punctual and reliable.

7 SSread some sentences of the article they’ve just read and decide if they are true (T) or false (F).

Suggested dialogues:

- Could you tell me anything interesting about social customs of greeting people in Japan?

- Yes, of course. As far as I can know when it is handed to a person in a superior position, it must be given and received with both hands, and you must take time to read it carefully, and not just put it in your pocket! Also the bow is a very important part of greeting someone. You should not expect the Japanese to shake hands. Bowing the head is a mark of respect and the first bow of the day should be lower than when you meet thereafter.

- Oh! Thousand thanks; do you know anything about punctuality in Japan?

- They always bang on time.

10 SS read the article and answer the questions.

TIP STRIP for SS:

· Read the text for general understanding.

· The word must make sense in the context of the text as a whole.

· Look out for fixed expressions, dependent prepositions after certain verbs and linking words and phrases.

· Read through the text and check that your answers make sense.
