CELEBRATIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD UNIT 4 WRITING SPEAKING Answers Answers D B E F G C H I J A
29 SS do the task individually on a separate piece of paper for the T to check it. 1 will he 2 aren’t you 3 haven’t you 4 were you 5 does she 6 isn’t he 7 hasn’t she 8 can’t you 9 will he 10 aren’t there
30 SS compare and contrast the people shown in the pictures. Think about their relations, emotions, purpose of meeting and wedding customs. Say which one you would like more and explain your choice. Suggested answers: It seems to me that both pictures show wedding ceremonies. As for the first picture there is a wedding in the church that is very popular in our country these days. The second picture shows Russian style wedding on the red square. 31 SSwork in pairs. They interview their partner about love and marriage. Suggested dialogue: - What is the right age to get married? - I don’t think that there is such an age as if you really love you want to be with your beloved all your life. - Why do we need to get married, to create a family? - We want to be loved, to have children. - What should we do to have a happy marriage? - We should be wiser and more patient. - Is it possible to love and be wise? - That depends on a person. In pairs, SS compare the questions they chose and say whether they believe the answers or not. Feed back to find out what information SS found interesting or are skeptical about. 32 SS discuss with each other different questions connected with the theme love and marriage. Suggested dialogue: - So, what would you do for your loved one? Would you change your religion? - If it were of vital importance for me I think I would. 33 SS discuss with each other about pros and cons of monogamy and polyandry, civil marriage, marriage contracts etc. Suggested dialogue: - What do you think about marriage contracts? - If you don’t want to lose your property and don’t trust your future husband/wife it is a wonderful opportunity to be married and sleep well.
34 SS have a project work. They work with a team. They should decide two important problems and make presentation of your views together asking their classmates all possible questions. The best team will be awarded. Feed back to find out what information SS found interesting or are skeptical about. 35 SS study the example of the short story and make necessary notes. Then they write their own short story (180-200 words) taking part in a short story competition. The competition rules say that the story must begin or end with the words: It was the most exciting and unusual wedding party I’ve visited.
1 In groups, SS discuss with their partner some traditional and religious holidays in different countries you heard about. Suggested answers: - Believe it or not but I know only Christian religious holidays such as Christmas, Easter Pancake etc that are very popular all over the world. What do you know about other holidays in different countries? - I have got the same problem, as I know nothing about religious holidays in India, for example. 2 SS look at the pictures and try to identify them. If they can’t, T says what the celebration is. Picture 1: Thanksgiving Day (words related to the picture: pilgrims, turkey, to thank) Picture 2: St. Patrick’s Day (words related to the picture: parade, beer, shamrock) Picture 3: New Year (words related to the picture: New Year’s tree, to decorate) Picture 4: Halloween (words related to the picture: children, costumes, “trick or treat”, pumpkin) Picture 5: Carnival (procession, costumes, confetti)
3 In the groups of three or four, SS compare the celebrations from the activity 2 with ones in their own country.
