38 SS study the example of the report and make necessary notes. Then they write their own report (180-200 words) about the superstitions in Russia. A group of foreign students are going to visit our country. The aim of the report is to give some useful information to visitors so that they can understand better Russian culture and peculiarities of Russian people’s behaviour.

1 In groups, SS discuss with their partner the statementsabout love and marriage they heard about.

Suggested answers:

- Do you agree that love makes the world go round.

- Yes, I do. There are a lot of examples of great love in the human history.

2 Explain the vocabulary that can be unfamiliar to SS.

bride	a woman on her wedding day
bridegroom	a man on his wedding day
bridesmaid	a girl accompanying and helping a bride at her wedding
best man	a man accompanying a groom at his wedding
ushers	groom’s male friends
veil	a covering of fine net worn by a woman on her wedding day
train	the part of a long dress
top hat	a man’s tall black or grey hat, worn with formal dress
morning suit	clothes worn by a man on very formal occasions

Then, in the groups of three or four, SS discuss the options to decide whether they have the same ones in their country.

3 SS read an article about good manners and choose the most suitable headings from the list (A-H) for each part (1-6) of the article.

TIP STRIP for SS:

· Read the text quickly for general understanding.

· You only need to understand the main point of each paragraph. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word.

· Read each paragraph; decide what the main point is, then find the best heading.

· Be careful – the headings won’t use the same words as the text.

When you have read all the paragraphs, go back and check your answers. Give SS five minutes to go through the headings and match the headings and parts of the article. Tell them to quests any new words from the context. Check answers. Feedback round the class.

4 SS work in groups and discuss ancient and modern marriage customs in different countries.

Suggested answers:

- What do you know about ancient marriage customs in different countries?

- According to the article among the Germanic Goths, a man married a woman from within his own community. When women were in short supply, he captured his bride-to-be from a neighboring village. The future bridegroom, accompanied by a male companion, seized any young girl who had strayed from the safety of her parental home.

5 SS read some sentences of the article and decide if they are true or false
